More Barrhead soldiers killed
lieutenant James Anderson
Intimation has been received by Mr and Mrs Anderson 8 George st Barrhead that their eldest son Liue James Anderson of the KOSB was killed on the 25th sept Liue Anderson was 26 years of age. He Joined the Army as a private in Sept 1914, at once exhibited an aptitude in military matters which speedily gained him the notice of his superiors, with the result that his promotion was of a phenomenally rapid character. He quickly passed through the non commissioned grade, and for special services was promoted on the field of Loos to a Lieutenancy. If he had lived it seems certain he would have had a successful military career for he had just been recommended for promotion to a Captaincy when unfortunate chances of war ended his life. The regret which is felt at the closing of so many young lifes is intensified in a case such as this where it closes also what promised a bright and successful career. Prior to Joining the Army Lieu Anderson was employed in Grahamson Foundry. Much sympathy will be felt for his parents in their sad bereavement. Of their Sons two Brothers are still in the Army , One of whom, Private Matthew Anderson , was wounded in some of the fighting on the Somme.
Captain James A Anderson is commemorated at Panel Reference: Pier and Face 4 A and 4 D. Memorial: THIEPVAL France

Matthew Anderson
Death Date: 11 Jun 1917
Rank: 2 Lieutenant (T)
Regiment: King's Own Scottish Borders
Battalion: 6th Battalion
Type of Casualty: Killed in action age 21 near Arras
Comments;- Anderson In loving and affectionate remembrance of Captain James Anderson 2nd KOSB killed on the Somme on 25th September 1916, Also 2nd Lieu Matthew Anderson 6th KOSB, Killed near Arras on the 10th June 1917, The dearly loved sons of Mr and Mrs A Anderson 8 George Street Barrhead.
Son of Mr And Mrs Alex Anderson of 8 George street Barrhead- youngest son Second Lieu Matthew Anderson of the KOSB age 21 years. Was employed in South Arthurlie Print Works; he enlisted in Sept 1914 and from them served in the ranks until a few months ago when he received his commission; His brother James was killed in Sept last- a third son is still serving with the forces. Writing to Mr Anderson's Father the Commanding officer expresses the sympathy of all the officers and pays high tribute to the deceased officer :- "Although he had only ben in the battalion a short time he proved himself a Gallant and fearless soldier. He showed a disregard for danger which is typical of our bravest officers and he met his death by cooly walking across an exposed bit of ground in an effort to replace and order back a sentry post of another Battalion on his right which had fallen back before an enemy patrol causing danger to his platoon. He realised the danger to his men and Unhesitatingly went to out things right, It is in this time of Battle that one judges the value of officers and men Their true worth, and it will be some consolation to you to know that his brother officers had formed a high opinion of him during this his first service with us."
Matthew is commemorated at Neilston Cemetery on the family stone and at Grave Reference: III. H. 6. Cemetery: BROWN'S COPSE CEMETERY, ROEUX
