Lochwinnoch War Memorial is located in Harvey Square, Lochwinnoch. Map Ref NS353 588

The memorial is a granite celtic cross on a low tapering block and plinth which contain the dedication inscription and roll of names on 3 faces. The main face of the monument is west facing. The west facing celtic cross shaft, arms and wheel are heavily embossed with knotwork. The back of the shaft of the cross has an incised inverted sword of sacrifice. The overall height of the memorial is 4 to 5m. The memorial is surrounded by low metal railing and is set in a mature square/garden with large trees and mature shrubs.

The memorial was by monumental sculptors Messrs. Scott Rae of Glasgow, the daybook entry reads:
'Order no. 5737, Lochwinnoch, Creetown cross, Erected September 1921, Daybook 363'.
The monument looks to be a copy of the St. Martin's Cross, Iona.

"Dangerously wounded near La Bethune, France, on 7th January, died at Stobhill Hospital on 9th inst., Private Huntly Gordon Stuart Brown, 9th H.L.I. (Glasgow Highlanders), youngest son of Mr & Mrs Stuart Brown, Auchengrange, Lochwinnoch."

"Private Huntly S. Brown (No.2214) of A Company of the 9th Battalion H.L.I. (Glasgow Highlanders), died in Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow, yesterday. He had been in Flanders on service with the 1st Battalion of the regiment and was shot through the head. For a time his condition appeared favourable, but he had a relapse, and died yesterday forenoon. Captain Young, the officer commanding the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion of the regiment at the Glasgow headquarters, ha arranged for the attendance of a firing party at Private Brown's funeral, which will take place at Lochwinnock, where his parents reside."

Previously reported missing, now officially presumed killed in action, on 5th June, 1916, Lance-Corporal (sic) Alexander Hunter, Canadian Mounted Rifles, of Saskatoon, aged 30 years, beloved husband of Margaret Ewing Logan, Braevar, Lochwinnoch, and beloved youngest son of James Hunter, cabinet manufacturer, Afton Cottage, Lochwinnoch.- Saskatoon papers please copy."

Named on the Caerlaverock Parish War Memorial in Dumfriesshire as:

ROBERT COLE

Robert Smith Cole – age 29 – Private (1529) 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Robert was employed by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company as a platelayer at Lochwinnoch when he enlisted in September 1914. He joined his battalion in France in May 1915.
Born 1885 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Margaret (Smith) Cole of Upper Conheath, Caerlaverock and of Mid Locharwoods, Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire. Husband of Jane Glen (Jamieson) Cole of 24 Colden Street, Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire who he married in 1909 in Lochwinnoch.
Killed in Action on 27 July 1915 and buried in Woburn Abbey Cemetery, Cuinchy, France.
Also named on the Caerlaverock Parish Church memorial and on the G&SW Railway Company memorial, now in Ayr Station.
