Hello Helen,
Welcome to the Forum.
All three 'McDowalls' are listed on Family Gravestones in 'The Joint Section of New Monkland Cemetery in Glenmavis although Thomas's surname is spelt McDOWELL, whereas John and Mathew's surname is spelt McDOWALL
I don't know whether you're aware of our 'sister' site - the Scottish War Graves Project? There are photos os the stones already posted on that site. This link: http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=217&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=150&mforum=scottishwargraves should take you directly to the page showing the photos. If the link doesn't work, try: http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/index.php?mforum=scottishwargraves then on the Lanarkshire Board, you'll find New Monkland Cemetery and the photos are on page 11 of the thread
John McDowall and Matthew McDowall were the sons of David & Agnes Harvie McDowall (nee Todd)
Thomas Orr McDowell was the son of George and Helen McDowell.
Could you confirm that these are the same men as mentioned on Airdrie War Memorial, and if so, is the spelling of Thomas's surname incorrect?
Also, obviously John and Matthew were brothers, but what relationship was Thomas to them (cousin possibly)?
It's not the first time we've discovered variants in spelling both on memorials and gravestones, although I tend to go with the spelling on the stones.
You can drive right round New Monkland so your husband might want to go and visit the family graves as visiting the memorial isn't very handy. If you'd like high resolution copies of the photos of each of the stones (to help in finding them), please don't hesitate to get in touch with me through a Private Message, give me details of your personal e-mail and I'll forward copies. There is a small office just inside the main gates in Condorrat Road and usually there are groundsmen around who, if shown the photos, would probably be quite happy to guide you to each of the stones.

H Anne, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I wanted first to speak to my husbands elderly aunt.
There were three McDowall brothers killed in ww1 but one was married and living in Ayrshire, his memorial stone is with his wife and child in Ayrshire, the aunt says Agnes the mother of the boys always said her sons would always be together and this is what led people to believe that it was the three brothers on the memorial.
Now to Matthew I have never quite figuered that one out, after a long time searching I found a death for him Dunoon 1919 he was found dead on Alexandra parade Dunoon and the cause of death was natural causes possibly heart giving out occupation was given as blacksmith and usual address was Woodend Cottage Airdrie, I just dont know what to make of it could he have been in a hospital any help would be appreciated.
Regard Helen |
