WW1
Alston, J. Douglas

(Glasgow Herald 18th March 1915)
"A telegram was received my Mr Andrew T. Alston, Inspector of Poor of New Monkland, at Airdrie on Tuesday night stating that his son, Second Lieutenant J. Douglas Alston, 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles (Cameronians), had been killed in action on 12th inst. The young officer was a law agent prior to receiving his commission, being a procurator in the office of his relative, Mr John Alston, Town Clerk, Coatbridge. He took an active part in the recruiting movement in the district before being commissioned, and was then located at Nigg, from which, after training, he was transferred to France. He was in action shortly after going to the front, and was one of the three survivors out of a company of 100 to which he had been attached, and he was then allowed a short furlough home. He returned to the front about a month ago, and appears to have fallen, with many other Scottish officers and men, in the fighting at Neuve Chapelle."

It looks like the people of Airdrie were ahead of most towns in collating a Roll of Honour from early in the war in order to better create a memorial at the wars end.

I thought I'd posted this image previously. It's an old postcard I found a while back.

It appears the inscription along the top wasn't always marked out in black.

The soldiers in No2 dress would be Royal Engineers TA whose TA centre was a few hundred yards from the memorial, beside Coatdyke railway station. The centre has now gone and housing built on the site.
