Here it is;
Mark
I see that you were the first one to mention the letter that Steve sent. He has asked me could I post this so people know what is happening. Please excuse my cheek at asking you. I just feel this is a positive email that needs to be shared,
thank you so much
regards
tisgrannie
From Steve Rogers ex BWMP.
Yes the old site has collapsed but I am copying all of the images to the CWGC in the near future as there may be the facility to make them searchable on their site. If not I will start another site, not in rivalry, as some have said as the old site is no longer.
With regard to other memorials between wars and post war, including family memorials that the BWMP were collecting, these will be available on the new site as well so nothing that has been submitted before will be lost or wasted. I know how much time and effort the volunteers have put in collecting these including myself.
The owner of the IWPP (Gary Nelson) who gets mentioned on the findagrave site has already offered me all of his images so no rivalry there.
I too was surprised not a mention on TGWF but the problem with forums is that they are often one sided views with not all the facts so they can be misleading. Both the originator of this thread and the one after will have received further communication from me regarding the way ahead but this has not been added so I may as well reiterate here that yes the original project has gone but collection goes on and a new site will be launched after talks with the CWGC next month.
If anyone needs to contact me about this I am on steve@thewargravesproject.org.uk
Regards

Does this mean anything pre-1914 is out-of-scope? This would mean there would be no place for the three regimental grave marker memorials in Stirling which Anne posted the other day.
There are a lot of very interesting pre-1914 markers / memorials out there and a lot of genealogist would be looking for information on nineteenth century military and naval ancestors.

It's maybe the case that anything pre-1914 would take too much research?
We can all click on CWGC etc., and with a bit of luck find who we're looking for and all the details alongside, but pre this date, it's much more complicated and takes a lot more digging - but for me personally, much more satisfying!

For me, the fact that you can't just do a basic search and hey presto makes it more interesting.
I prefer to do a bit of work and not have it all fed to me. |

Hello Everyone,
I am the Gary Nelson mentioned above. While I continue to encourage people like ourselves to upload photos at Findagrave and be the master of their own uploads, please continue to send copies of your photos to the appropriate Project (British, South African, Austrlian, etc) as the more archiving of the photos the better. Anyone who has questions about Findagrave may contact me through this web site. Regardless of the historical period of the memorial or headstone, Findagrave would be a very appropriate location to display your digital efforts.
Cheers and regards to all, _________________ Gary E Nelson

I think that discussion on this has run its course, especially in light of my recent announcement.
Please see here for the latest news.
This thread will now be locked. |

I've just reopened this thread.
I don't want to go into the how's and why's the BWMP came to an end but its demise seems to have spawned a few war graves projects.
There's our own Scottish War Graves Project - which offers a free service
Then there's the War Graves Photographic Project which is using the BWMP photographs and charging folk an awful lot of money.
Didn't the other half of the BWMP start another site too?
Then there was another one mentioned somewhere last week which is free like ours but I can't remember where.
