Hope this isn't too far off topic. I wonder if someone might be able to point me in the direction of a resource which could help me identify the final resting place of an army officer who died in Inverness 19 Oct 1927 aged 86.

I would contact the public library in Inverness. Give them all the details you have and they may be kind enough to look up the local papers for the period. Hopefully there will be a death notice.
Also, you could contact Highland FHS (family history society) and ask them your query and see what they advise.
