(Note-there are only 4 names listed for WWII and I'm a bit concerned that I've missed a list of WWII names on one side of the pedestal. I'll post the entry as it is for now and hopefully will confirm the WWII names soon)

You haven't missed a side of the Memorial, just got a bit confused with it!

I was born and brought up in the village of Gourdon, so have done some research into some of the names on the Memorial, mainly coz I am related to quite a few of them! However I don't seem to be able to put my hands on that documents at the moment, but will post more when I find them.

Here is the WWI list.

I will check up on the list and update all I have and if you can supply more info that would be good. Check other memorials around your area and maybe some of your men might appear on them as well. Anne

This is not the original position of the Memorial. Originally it was down in the village on William Street. Sometime in the early 1950's it was moved to its current position at the top of the village.

I asked my father why it was moved, he said it had something to do with the garage proprietor opposite needing the area as a forecourt. All the fishing boat owners donated a box of fish to be sold to raise the funds for it to be moved. Originally there was a metal fence round it with a gate.

It was unveiled by Major W Riddoch in June 1921.

I will try and find some pictures next time I'm home of the original position.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Do you have a special interest in William Cargill? Do you have any other information on him? A photo of the man himself would be very welcome.

Yes William Cargill was my fathers younger brother, he was born and brought up in William Street, Gourdon, his father was known as old sarge and was quite a character, he was in the black watch during the first world war and the mechant navy during the second, he was also the quartermaster on the Carpathia when it went to the rescue of the Titanic, William had 2 brothers and 2 sisters, John who died in 2004, James died 2007 (my father), Katherine died 2007 and Elizabeth who died in infancy. All the family are buried in Bervie Cemetary. I was also born in Gourdon and lived there until I was 15 when my parents moved to Stonehaven but my mother and father returned to Gourdon in 1989 sadly they are both now gone the only two surviving from that generation are Mina, Johns wife and John Henderson, Kaths husband who also returned to Gourdon in their later years and John is also a war veteran. I do have a photo of William and will look for it and post it on the site.

I can not seem to find anything on this person at all. There is a mention of a David Balneaves being lost at sea with SS Streamfisher on 25/12/1928 on a grave stone in Bervie Cemetery. But this monument was 1921. There is also a mention of an Andrew Milne Ritchie, being lost at sea off the same ship on the same day on an other grave in the cemetery, but I don't seem to be able to find anything about this ship at all.
