WMR 72119
OS Map Ref NX 56247 93191
Located on outside wall of Carsphairn Parish Church
Although the memorials inside the church are listed on UKNIWM, this unlisted memorial is around the back of the church on the outside wall. Even the minister was not aware of its existence. Just goes to show that it is always worth having a good look around yourself.
The lettering is heavily oxidised and difficult to read therefore I offer a transcription.
In loving memory of
Lieut W H Cathcart
3rd Batt Worcester Regt
Born 3rd May 1880 Died 17th Jany 1902
At Mafeteng Basutoland South Africa
While serving with
The 16th Mounted Infantry
And from the site www.redcoat.info
CATHCART - Lieutenant William Harold - 3/Worcestershire Regt.
Died of enteric at Mafeteng, Basutoland. 7th Jan. 1902. Aged 21. Son of Colonel A.M. Cathcart (Grenadier Guards), of Ripon. Born May 1880.
I don’t know what his connection was with Carsphairn.

I remembered there was a Cathcart listed on the Carsphairn Memorial;
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=223
Name: CATHCART, AUGUSTUS ERNEST
Initials: A E
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Captain
Regiment/Service: King's Royal Rifle Corps
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Age: 39
Date of Death: 14/09/1914
Additional information: Son of Col. The Hon. A. M. and Mrs. Cathcart, of Mowbray House, Ripon; husband of Hilda Renee Cathcart, of Scagglethorpe, Malton, Yorks.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Sp. Mem. 1.
Cemetery: PAISSY CHURCHYARD
It appears that both were the sons of Col. The Hon. A.M. Cathcart.
One son killed in the Boer War and the other in the Great War. I wonder how many families experienced this type of tragedy? |

The Cathcarts seem to be another very well-to-do family. Their ancestral file is on the Familysearch website and 'googling' Augustus Murry Cathcart will lead to a wealth of information.
I have copied the following snippet;
The old "Craigengillan" lands bordered the Waterhead property to the south towards the town of St. John of Dalry......Colonel Cathcart died in 1868 and Jean (McAdam) died in 1878 childless and a widow. Having no heir the property was left to a nephew Augustus Murry Cathcart
So in short they would be landed proprietors, owning a few estates and must obviously have held one at/near Carsphairn ? |

On the 1915 Valuation Roll the eldest son, Major Frederick Adrian Cathcart, is recorded as being the owner of several properties in and around Carsphairn including Brockloch House and the Lead Mines at Woodhead. _________________ Ken |
