Oban war memorial unveiled on 11th November 1923 stands at the end of the Corran Esplanade. The architect was Messrs. Richardson & Mackay of Edinburgh and the sculptor Alexander Carrick. The entire concept for the memorial was certainly Carrick's and this is arguably the artists finest work featuring the carved figures fo two Highland Infantrymen carrying a wounded comrade. I think the work is the culmination of an idea to create a modern standing stone which began with the Lochawe war memorial and was continued with the Killin memorial before finding its final form in the Oban monument which I think drew its inspiration from the cup-and-ring marked glacial erratic which stands beside the memorial.
(Ref. The Oban Times, Saturday November 17th 1923)
More information on the sculptor can be viewed at: www.alexandercarrick.webeden.co.uk

Below is a photo of one of my old postcards which shows the way in which the glacial boulder provides a perfect foil to the war memorial. By the looks of it it was taken in the 1920's before the council sited a street light hard up against the boulder.

The unveiling took place on 11th November 1923 by Lieutenant Colonel W.H. MacAlpine-Leny of Duror, D.S.O.. His speech was reported in the Oban Times:
'I am sure that we all feel that in our generation no monument of stone is required to keep fresh in our minds the great sacrifice made by so many of our Highland lads but at the same time we wish to leave behind us for the benefit and example of future generations a monument commemorating the patriotism and loyalty as well as the names of those brave men who gave all in the cause of freedom. While naturally today our thoughts are largely centred on the dead, we must not forget the great debt of gratitude we owe also to the living. We must bear in mind those equally brave men who gave up their civil employment and left their home and families to go and fight for their country. Many of those men, though spared from death, now find themeselves in a position which makes it a hard struggle for them to live. Our dead are now in better hands than ours, but we can at least try to do what we can for the living. Anyone who has visited some of our great hospitals, where even now, five years after the War, men lie maimed and broken, must feel with me that there are worse things than death. For regular soldiers like myself, war is of course our profession, but I have the very greatest admiration for those men of the Royal Naval Reserve, Territorials and New Armies, who volunteered in the cause of freedom to fight for their King and Country.'

Thanks Jamie for posting this beautiful memorial. It's position on the water is part of its beauty, but it is a great design that was well crafted and has been well cared for.
As a point of personal interest, it commemorates the dead from The Argyll Mountain Battery, which had a section from Oban. This memorial clearly shows that the losses from this unit were disproportionately high for a TF RGA battery which has been largely forgotten. (Soon to be remedied if I can finish the book and get it published!)
A most appropriate honor. In contrast, the Highland Division memorial is quite modest (near the roundabout in town), but striking nonetheless.
A beautiful memorial in a beautiful wee town.
Mike Morrison

Here's another photo of the memorial. I quite like this one taken at dusk.

Ian

Your postcard shows of the uniform of the nearest soldier more clearly. He is wearing a jerkin similar to a Highlander in another of Carrick's War memorials - Dornoch.

Regards

Adam,

I'm sure that Alexander Carrick, as an ex-gunner, took pains with his uniform detail.

The jerkin worn by the soldiers was a goatskin jerkin and Carrick used this for his soldiers at Oban, Dornoch and Killin. I think he probably used it more to simplify the lines of the sculpture. In the case of Oban the inspiration for the group was almost certainly the glacial boulder which stands beside the monument and the jerkins would allow Carrick to avoid a lot of unecessary detail and get the effect he was after which is the soldiers almost seeming to emerge out of the rock (at the back the soldiers are very roughly carved and you can see this effect even more strongly).
By the way Carrick's daughters donated the goatskin jerkin that Carrick used with his models to the Folk Museum at Biggar. The last time I visited which was some years ago it was worn by a manikin shepherd in one of the displays.
