Not listed on UKNIWM.

Location, inside Bargrennan church at OS Map Ref NX 349 766. I have not found any WW2 memorial that covers this parish.

I got lucky with this one, the windows are quite low and I managed to spot and photograph the memorial through the window of the locked church.

I found one of those listed on a gravestone in the churchyard. Notwithstanding the discrepancy in spelling and date of death, I think it is this man. (SNWM shows him as born in Newton Stewart (the nearest town to Bargrennan).

I understand that this church is now closed for worship and is likely to be sold. I will try and find out more.

I visited the now closed church yesterday and took the photos below. The church is in the final stages of being sold, the pulpit has been sold and the pews are about to go. As a reminder, the civic memorial is inside this church, the men listed are not listed on any other memorial to my knowledge. The memorial is to be removed shortly to a safe place and thereafter is to be included in a newly constructed memorial in the graveyard facing the church. The funds are intended to come from funds raised from the sale of church fittings and a grant from the War Memorials Trust, the application is in preparation. Exact details of the construction are yet to be decided.

The plaque is of marble with a dark stone (slate?) backing.

The session clerk, Mr Michael Dunlop is standing on the intended site of the memorial and the photo of the church is taken from the same spot. On the internal shot of the church, the memorial is to the left and the other plaque is to a former minister and is to remain in the building.

Mr Dunlop reports that there are no relatives of any of those listed living within the parish and that no remembrance service has been held there for several years. I hope this is something we can rectify with the new memorial.

Great story Paul.

Incidentally this is the second "Canadian" I've seen with the forename IVIE.
Ivie Ferguson Carter is listed on the Rhonehouse School RoH
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=2087

Where does that name originate?

More commonly a girl's name it can also be a boy's name. Variation of Ivy.

Forenames used to be less gender specific than they are today. Evelyn Waugh's first wife was named Evelyn!

update from Michael Dunlop...................

The War Memorial has now been removed to Douglas Swan & Sons' workshop in Kirkcudnright and I am awaiting proposals for its re-erection in the graveyard. Will keep you posted when action has taken place.

A report of the unveiling was published in the Wigtownshire Free Press on 7th July 1921 (page 5). This reveals a couple of puzzles to be solved.

The memorial was unveiled on Sunday 3rd July 1921 by Mrs Fox, Polbae and the service was conducted by the minister Rev Joseph Campbell.

The memorial is described as a 'brass tablet' but it is quite clearly marble. I find it difficult to believe that this small rural parish would raise both a marble and brass tablet. The inscription is given in the newspaper article in full and agrees with the marble plaque.

The real puzzle is that the plaque was unveiled in Knowe Public School. So was this church originally Knowe Public School (it is certainly on a hill)? Or was it originally in another building? If so, where?
