It has now been confirmed that the notice of unveiling referred to above was in fact for a different memorial at Knowe public school which I have now posted on its own thread. We have no details of the unveiling of this memorial.

Michael Dunlop has been running a campaign through the Galloway Gazette to identify descendants of those commemorated. An article was published in the Galloway Gazette of 4th November to say that the memorial is to be rededicated in a new location in the church grounds on 11th November.

I will post an updated photograph once I have had the opportunity to visit the revised memorial.

Bargrennan was one of those "odd" Quoad Sacra Parishes covering both sides of what is now the A714 route between Newton Stewart and Girvan, just before the Ayrshire County border. It included parts of Minnigaff Parish in Kirkcudbrightshire and Penninghame Parish Wigtownshire. It became a Registration District of Kirkcudbrightshire in 1865.

Private IVIE GRAHAM GORDON, 31st Canadians.
Ivie Graham Gordon, Private (466779) 31st Bn.Canadian Infantry. Age 36.
Ivie was educated at the Ewart High School in Newton Stewart He had been in Canada for about 6 years and was working as a butcher when he enlisted in July 1915 at Calgary, Alberta.
Born 1881 in Bargrennan. Son of Gilbert and Jane or Jeanie (Graham) Gordon of Kirkcalla Farm. Husband of Janet Smith (Lawrie) Gordon of London who he married in 1907 in Newmilns, Ayrshire. Killed in action 9 July 1917 and buried in Fosse No.10 Communal Cemetery Extension, Sains-en-Gohelle, France.
Also named on the Ewart High School War Memorial.


Private ALEXANDER HANNAY, Royal Fusiliers.
Alexander Hannay, Private (G/47924) 2nd Bn. Royal Fusiliers. Age 23.
Born 1894 at Bent Farm, Minnigaff. Son of Alexander and Janet (Millar) of Craiglarie, Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire. Enlisted June 1915 in 23rd Bn (1st Sportsman's) Royal Fusiliers. Wounded three times.
Missing in action 24 April 1917 and listed on the Arras Memorial, France.


Lce. Coprl. ROBERT H. JOHNSTONE, K.O.Sco.Borderers.
Robert Haining Johnstone, Lance Corporal (24998) 6th Bn. King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 19.
Robert, a “Bargrennen-bred lad” was a shepherd at Grobdale of Girthon Farm when he enlisted in June 1916.
Born 1897 in Bargrennan. Son of William and Isabella (Boyd ) Johnstone of Cally Mains, Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Killed in action 7 December 1916 and buried in Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.
Also named on the War Memorial in Gatehouse-of-Fleet.

Note: All military records use KELLY. Prior to his marriage his name was Kelly on civil records.
John Kelly, Private (41272) 13th Bn. Royal Scots. Formerly Private (31929) Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 31.
John was a lorryman and living in Barrhill, Ayrshire when he enlisted in the RSF in November 1916 in Ayr.
Born 1886 in Bargrennan. Son of John and Jane or Jeannie (Harrie) Kelly of Lochside, Barrhill, Ayrshire. Husband of Jeannie (McDowall) Kellie of Bridgend, Barrhill who he married in 1907 in New Luce, Wigtownshire.
Missing in action 23 April 1917 and listed on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also listed on the Barrhill Parish War Memorial with his brother Private William Kellie (31874) Royal Scots Fusiliers - Killed 21 March 1918.


Private ROBERT MELROSE, M.M. Scots Guards.
Robert Melrose, Private (10144) 1st Bn. Scots Guards. Age 23.
Robert enlisted in Gorebridge, Midlothian in September 1914 and joined his battalion in France in February 1915. He was awarded a M.M. in October 1916.
Born 1893 in Yarrow, Selkirkshire. Son of William and Margaret (Anderson) Melrose of Corriefeckloch, Bargrennan.
Missing in action 15 September 1916 and listed on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Also named on the Stobhill Parish War Memorial in Gorebridge.


Private HUGH McCAULL, Scots Guards.
Note:All of Hugh's records use McCALL.
Hugh McCall, Private (11036) 2nd Bn. Scots Guards. Age 28.
Born 1887 in Bargrennan. Son of James and Jane (McCrae) McCaull of Suie, Bargrennan.
Hugh had been a Policeman in Glasgow for 6 years when he enlisted in September 1914.
Missing in action 16 May 1915 and listed on Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also listed on the City of Glasgow Police Memorial and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.

Robert McWhirter, Private (S/9419) 10th Bn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Age 20.
Robert was a shepherd at Bennan Farm, Mossdale, Kells when he enlisted in May 1915. He joined his battalion in France in October 1915 and was killed at Longueval.
Born 1895 in Carsphairn, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Jane (McKie) McWhirter of Old Glenlee Farm, New Galloway, Kells, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in action 19 July 1916 and listed on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Also listed on the Kells Parish War Memorial.

Robert McWhirter, Private (S/13661) 7th Bn. Cameron Highlanders. Age 32.
Born 1883 in Bargrennan. Son of the late Helen (McTier) McWhirter. Son of John McWhirter and step-son of Janet McWhirter of Barlure, New Luce, Wigtownshire.
William was an ironmonger who had served his apprenticeship in Newton Stewart before working for Mr. T. Duff in Annan. He enlisted in September 1914.
Missing in action 25 September 1915 and listed on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Annan and the New Luce War Memorials.


Private ANDREW WELSH, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew Welsh, Private (16261) 6th Bn. King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 22.
Born 1894 in Bargrennan. Son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Bennets) Welsh of Palgown, Bargrennan. He joined the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in August 1915 and was wounded there. He was wounded again on 1 July 1916.
Missing in action 21 July 1916 and listed on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Also named on the War Memorials in Gatehouse-of-Fleet and in Newton Stewart.
