1939 – 1945

JOSEPH BALLANTYNE.
Joseph Black Ballantyne, Gunner (1486563) 449 Battery, 114 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery. Age 38.
Joseph was hit by a motor vehicle on the Wigtown to Whithorn Road in Sorbie Parish and died of a fractured skull.
Born 1904 in Stranraer,Wigtownshire. Son of Margaret Veitch Ballantyne. Husband of Elizabeth Agnew (McKie) Ballantyne who he married in 1936 in Whithorn.
Accidentally killed on 2 December 1942 and buried in Whithorn Cemetery. (CWG)


ALEXANDER CAIN.
Alexander (Sandy) Cain, Private (3191783) 7th/10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Age 24.
Born 1918 in Glasserton, Wigtownshire. Son of Daniel and Isabella (Boan) Cain. Husband of Annie Mary (Nicholson) Cain, of Whithorn who he married in 1939 in Dumfries.
Killed in action 6 April 1943 and buried in Sfax War Cemetery, Tunisia.
[The battle of Wadi Akarit took place in a narrow coastline strip between the sea and the coastal towns of Gabes and El Hamma. The 7th Argylls Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Campbell, was awarded the Victoria Cross for actions during the battle]



ROBERT FLANNIGHAN.
Robert James Flannighan, Stoker 1st Class (P/KX 152474) HMS Quorn, Royal Navy. Age 23.
Born 1921 in Whithorn. Son of Mary Flannighan, later Mrs Peter McGinn, of High Street, Whithorn.
Killed in action/Lost at Sea 3 August 1944 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
[The Destroyer “Quorn” was an escort for convoys of personnel during the Normandy Landings. On 3 August, she was hit and sunk during a heavy attack on the British assault area by a force of E-boats, explosive motorboats, human torpedoes and low flying aircraft]

THOMAS HORNER.
Thomas Horner, Private (3188111) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 27.
Born 1917 in Whithorn. Son of John Potts Horner and of Mary Jane (MacKnight Cain) Horner of Whithorn.
Killed in action 21 January 1945 and buried in Sittard War Cemetery, Netherlands.
[The 52nd (Lowland) Division fought in this vicinity from 18th to 24th January 1945, clearing an area west of the River Roer]


RONALD HUTCHISON.
Ronald Roberts Hutchison, Private (2889828) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 21.
Born 1921 in Glasserton, Wigtownshire. Son of Margaret Stanhope Hutchison, and stepson of Thomas Edward Stepney, of Lower Kingswood, Tadworth, Surrey.
Died on Active Service as a Prisoner of War 4 November 1942 and buried in Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, Thailand.
[The 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders fought in the battle for Singapore in February 1942. The men of this battalion suffered more casualties as Prisoners of War in Japanese captivity than they did during the fighting on Singapore Island and Malaya]


JAMES McCUTCHEON.
Thought to be:
James McCutcheon, Private (3192340) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 21.
Born 1919 in Wigtownshire. (GRoS has two entries; at Kirkinner and at Glasserton) Son of Hugh and Janet (Murray) McCutcheon of Culvennan Farm, Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died of Wounds 21 April 1941 in Vert Memorial Hospital, Haddington, East Lothian and buried in Girthon Parish Cemetery, Kircudbrightshire. (CWG)
Also named on the Crossmichael Parish War Memorial.
[Six men of 5th KOSB were killed on the beach between Dunbar and North Berwick when a mine they were guarding exploded]

JOHN M. MARTIN.
John Millan Martin, Leading Airman (FAA/JX 401581) 772 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, H.M.S. Landrail, Royal Navy. Age 20.
Born 1923 in Whithorn. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Agnes Martin of George Street, Whithorn.
Killed on active service 18 January 1944 and named on the Lee-on-Solent Memorial, Hampshire.
[HMS Landrail was the name for the Royal Naval Air Station Machrihanish near Campbeltown in Argyllshire. John and his pilot, Petty Office J. W. Crow, were killed when their aircraft crashed into the Firth of Clyde off Arran. A memorial to both men was erected at Corriecravie, Arran in 1997]


JACK RODGER.
John (Jack) Rodger, Lance Sergeant (5729858) 2/7th Battalion, The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey) Age 28.
Jack was a bus conductor in Bath when he enlisted in April 1940. He went overseas in 1941 just after his baby son Lloyd J. C. Rodger died. His wife was working in a NAAFI canteen in Scotland.
Born 1915 in Whithorn. Son of William and Mary Ann (Dalziel) Rodger. Husband of Ada Alice (Taynton) Rodger who he married in 1939 in Bath, Somerset. Alice died in 1944 in Newton Stewart.
Killed in action 28 October 1943 and buried in Minturno War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Bath War Memorial.
[The battalion took part in the capture of Tunis in May 1943. They then fought in the allied landing at Salerno, Italy in September 1943 and were involved in some of the bloodiest fighting in Italy]


JAMES WYLLIE.
James Wyllie, Flying Officer/Pilot (139322) 296 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 21.
James was educated at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh and worked in Wyllie and Sons grain merchant business in Garlieston, Wigtownshire before he joined the RAF in 1941. After flight training in Canada, he served in Tunisia, Sicily and Italy. James was killed in a flying accident and his death was registered at Christchurch, Hampshire.
Born 1922 in Garlieston, Sorbie, Wigtownshire. Son of John Taylor Wyllie and Dorothea Stark (Henry) Wyllie of Whithorn.
Killed on active service on 6 December 1943 and buried in Whithorn Cemetery. (CWG)
Also remembered on an individual memorial (a font) in Whithorn Church and on the Merchiston Castle School memorial.
[No. 296 Squadron RAF was an airborne forces squadron. With sister squadrons 295 and 297 it formed 38 Wing and in December 1943 were flying Armstrong Whitworth Albemarle aircraft]

I was in Newton Stewart mureum today and noticed they have Alex Cain's Memorial Card on display mourning his death in WW1.
