Peterhead - Banff & Buchan District
UKNIWM Ref No. 8621

The Peterhead war memorial takes the form of a tall cenotaph on pedestal and three low steps, constructed on grey granite blocks. The commemoration and names of the dead are listed on pink granite panels set into the faces of the monument. The names of the WWII dead are listed on additional pink granite tablets.
The memorial stands in front of the kirkyard on South Road.
Many fishing communities such as Peterhead seem to have favoured memorials in the form of very tall obelisks or cenotaphs which would be visible from out at sea. The reason often appears to have been that the monument would provide an obvious and accurate bearing for boats steering for home, which is a nice idea.

The monument stands in beside the kirkyard, South Road, and was unveiled on 6th August 1922.

Like many coastal communities Peterhead paid a high price in the wars with many men serving in the Merchant Navy and Naval Reserves in addition to the Services. I had a look at the naval contribution and as far as I can see from the records Peterhead lost 5 men killed at Jutland on 31st May 1916, just a month before the opening day of the Somme. A terrible blow to a relatively small and tight knit community.
Tragically four of the five were on board Invincible, which I take it must have been a coincidence. Only one, Stoker Steven Lynch, was on H.MS. Queen Mary and there were apparently no Peterhead men on the third British Battle-Cruiser to blow up that day, H.M.S. Indefatigable.

Jim

I'm not sure it would have been a coincidence. Pre-war RNR men were mobilised together and were probably sent to larger ships in groups. I've seen this in the case of Sutherland and Caithness RNR men.

In the case of fishing towns using memorials as bearings for the harbour from the sea I know Helmsdale's memorial was used for that purpose.

Regards

Adam

To the Glory of Almighty God

The men of this town who gave their lives
For Freedom in the Great War of
1914—1918
“So they passed over and all the trumpets
Sounded for them on the other side”

Jim Buchan takes the following information from “Peterhead in old picture postcards”

The War Memorial Fund was started with a donation of £5,000 by the daughter and son-in-
law of the late Provost Leask, everybody had the opportunity to contribute during door-to-door collections. By 1st June 1920, there was about £10,000in the fund. An Edinburgh architect designed the memorial which was erected by an Aberdeen firm at a cost of about £2,500.The 40feet high obelisk carrying a quotation from “The Pilgrims Progress”—“So they passed over and the trumpets sounded for them on the other side”---has four sunken panels, one on each side, with names of the fallen. The memorial was unveiled by Lord Polwarth on the 16th August 1922 and taken into the custody of the Town Council on 5th August 1923.
There are approximately 360 names on this memorial.

The Drill Hall Kirk Street

Robert Robertson—solicitor—Bank Agent—Lt. Colonel M.V.O.,V.D.
Robertson’s connection with the volunteers started in 1860 as a Private in the 1st Aberdeenshire artillery. He joined the rifles in 1871 as Lieutenant In charge of St. Fergus half company which in 1875 was amalgamated under a new war office arrangement with the 9th A.R.V. Peterhead rising to Lieutenant Colonel in 1892.
In 1879 he was instrumental in the building of the Drill Hall. The necessary funds being raised by public subscription and by the riflemen themselves successors of the Old Defensibles who had manned the town's batteries since the foundation of Keith Inch. The cost of the building was £1,500. On consolidation in 1881 the Drill Hall was handed over to the Officer commanding the battalion to be held in trust for the Peterhead Company. A tablet that was on the front of the hall bears the following inscription:
Built by the 9th A.R.V. Corps Peterhead R. Robertson Camp Commandant 1879
The hall was used to a great extent to raise money to build the impressive War memorial on the south road to commemorate those who had fallen in the 1914—1918 war. Colonel Robertson had 6 sons who all followed him into military careers. As well as weekly dances and house to house collections plus private donations the generosity of the people of Peterhead soon had enough to erect the monument and on the 6th August 1922 it was unveiled.
The hall was used extensively after World War 11 as a badminton court, for weekly dances and as a gymnasium etc.
Returning from the war Mr. Martin resumed head of the Episcopal school in Hanover St. and the pupils used it for their gym. He was a strict but fair teacher. One such example being if any boys were caught fighting in the playground he immediately broke up the fight but next week at gym the same two would be given a pair of boxing gloves and under Queensberry rules and a very watchful eye they would settle the argument.
The Old Drill Hall roundabout has served it’s purpose for over 100 years, and should have laid claim to being a designated historic building. Using local craftsmen and renowned Peterhead granite, however the late 1960’s and 1970’s was a time to pull down buildings as in Threadneedle St. and parts of Maiden Street {now a car park}. The houses and shops in St Peter’s Street were also deemed to come down and make way for what is now known as “The St. Peter’s Street Folly” All this was described at the time as vandalism on the part of authority and I’m afraid the Rev. J. Alexander, Mrs Lumsden and councillor Fred Duthie lost the battle and instead of spending a few thousand £’s to upgrade the historic building the powers that were in at the time decided to do away with one roundabout to make way for a multi-thousand pound new one. In the Buchan Observer on the 1st March 1975 it was stated the antique slates had been removed from the roof. The Drill Hall came down soon after.
