The surname Patience features on the memorial and I wondered if they are related to Sam Patience who's diary features in the book 'Finest Hour' by Tim Clayton & Phil Craig, Coronet Books, ISBN-10 0340769211.
Its quite a story, Sam Patience was the son of an Avoch fisherman and the youngest of seven sons. He and his sister were the youngest and had to stand eating in the kitchen as there was no room at the table for them. He attended the village school and joined his father's boat when he was 13 and later The New Zealand Shipping Line. He then joined the R.N.R. and in 1939 joined H.M.S. Resolution. On Resolution he served on the gun crews at Mers el Kebir and with the ill-fated expeditionary force to Dakar were the Resolution was torpedoed by a French submarine. Resolution limped to Freetown for repairs and Sam Patience was sent to Nova Scotia to form the crew of a lend-lease destroyer serving as quartermaster.
By a quirk of fate Sam was in a bar in Halifax and met a quartermaster who was desperate to get home and was serving on the armed merchant cruiser Jervis Bay which was stuck waiting for a convoy. Sam's destroyer was ready to leave and so the two got permission from their respective captains to swap postings. Sam Patience fulfilled his boyhood dream and took the wheel of an ocean liner. At 4.55p.m. on 5th November 1940 Jervis Bay was escorting convoy HX84 when a fighting top was sighted on the horizon. This was the German pocket-battle ship Admiral Scheer which opened fire on the convoy. Jervis Bay'sCaptain Edward Fagen immediately turned to engage and in a heroic and very unequal engagement, during which Sam Patience was blown from the forward 6" gun, Jervis Bay was destroyed and sunk though her action saved most of the convoy.
Sam survived and was picked up by a Norwegian merchant ship. He went on to serve on Malta and Arctic Convoys. After the war Sam married and settled in East London were he died in 2000.

**Mode Edit Adam**
Captain Fagen was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for the Jervis Bay action

Unusually, this memorial lists the first who fell.

There's a confusing entry on one of the Great War panels.

Seaman D Davidson R.E.

Does R.E. stand for Royal Engineers and should he be Sapper, or is R.E. a Naval abbreviation?

Also on the WW2 names this man is not listed under R.N. but R.N.S.R.

If you look him up on CWGC and SNWM he's listed as Royal Navy, so no clue to what RNSR stands for.

Adam
I am just wondering if the above man is actually David Bain MacLennan who was Cpl 6657 Scots Guards, and not Macleman. I have checked for Macleman on CWGC site and no man of this name is listed.
David Bain MacLennan was born Avoch and he was a Northumberland policeman, his parents lived at Pitfour, Rosehaugh, Avoch. I have Maclennan's full history which I can add to the site if I have the correct man.

The above man's name has been spelled in a number of ways on different documents so I have obtained his birth certificate, Army Short Service Attestation form and police history to clarify his history.

David Bain McLeman was born on the 6th June 1887 at Bog of Afterflow, Avoch to parents Alexander (general labourer) and Catherine McLeman (nee McLennan) His birth was number 33 of 1887 in the Parish of Avoch in the County of Ross. His parents married on the 8th November 1871 at Avoch.

On the 23rd November 1906 he attested for service with the Scots Guards at Inverness and was allocated the regimental number 6657. His details were entered on the form by the recruiting officer, a Colour Sergeant.
David Bain McLennan aged 19 years 6 months born Avoch, 5'10 in height, occupation farm servant. Next of kin his father Alexander McLennan of Pitfour, Rosshaugh, Avoch. When David signed the form he did so as
D B MacLennan, the letters 'ac' were then crossed out and the letter 'c' entered to make his signature match the surname entered by the Colour Sergeant.
On the 5th December 1906 he was posted to the 1st Battalion in London, and served in the UK. On 4.12.1908 he extended his service to complete 7 years with the colours. He qualified as a marksman and also obtained a machine gun qualification.
25.12.1911 Posted to Egypt where he was appointed unpaid Lance Corporal on 8.8.1911, and paid Lance Corporal on 31.12.1911.
2.1.1913 Returned to UK and on 23.11.1913 transferred to Army Reserve as a Lance Corporal and was paid a gratuity of £7. He informed the army that he intended to join either the London Dock Police or Glasgow Tramways.

Appointed to the River Tweed Police as a water bailiff, (date not known) he resigned this position on 21.2.1914.
6.3.1914 Married Elizabeth Sim Miller of Boldside, Galashiels.

He applied to join Northumberland County Constabulary and gave the following details. Occupation River Tweed Police Officer, 5'10+ in height, age 26 years 7 months, married man living at Boldside, Fishing Lodge, Galashiels.
David Bain MacLennan was appointed to Northumberland County Constabulary on the 16th March 1914 as PC285, 3rd class constable.
16.3.1914 - 30.4.1914 HQ Morpeth (Training)
1.5.1914 Posted Wallsend
4.8.1914 Recalled to the colours, mobilized London on the 5th with the 1st Battalion, Scots Guards as a Private.
13.8.1914 Embarked for France landing at Le Havre
14.9.1914 KIA near Vendresse, France, rank at this time given as Corporal. Commemorated on a memorial at La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre, Seine-et-Marne, France.

From letters with the police after his death, it stated that his father was dead and his mother was living at Pitfour, Avoch.
He had three brothers living in Canada, they were employed as a woodman, mason and carpenter. Another brother was a publican in Glasgow and he had a married sister living in Ross-shire.

20.5.1919 His widow acknowledged receipt of his 1914 Star which was issued by the form to Cpl D B MacLennan, again the 'ac' was crossed out and the letter 'c' entered, however his widow signed for the medal as E S MacLennan.
23.1.1922 His widow acknowledged receipt of his clasp for the 1914 Star and BWM & Victory which were named to Pte D B McLennan, she signed as E S Lockie (possibly remarried)

His name is recorded on Avoch War Memorial as Cpl D B MacLeman and Northumberland County Constabulary War Memorial as L/Cpl D B MacLennan

This man has I hope finally been identified by the above information as the Cpl D B Macleman on Avoch War Memorial.

John

David Asprey has kindly contacted us with some information on why this man would have a naval rank when he was in the Royal Engineers:

"Although I see that the CWGC lists him as a sapper, the Army had a sizeable fleet during WW1, particularly a cross-channel supply operation taking supplies via the French river/canal network to the Western Front, run by the Inland Water Transport Directorate of the War Office. It was effectively part of the Royal Engineers. The crews were Army personnel, quite separate from the RN."
