On the OS map there's a Glenvarragill House beside the A87 just South of Portree, near the turn off for the B883

If you go to the OS get-a-map website

http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/

and enter

NG475401

It will show you where it is.

Regards

Glenvarragill is the house. The A87 runs through Glen Varragill. It's called Glen Varigill on the Forestry Commision website.

The SDGW CD-Rom shows Private Alexander Campbell of the Labour Corps was born in Snizort and enlisted in Glasgow.

He was formerly 30029 of the Cameron Highlanders and 601558 of the Labour Corps.

According to SDGW he died in France & Flanders. He quite obviously didn't if he's buried in Glasgow. Just shows you can't take the SDGW as gospel.

Snizort parish is north of Portree though and Glen Varragill is in Portree Parish. Again I'd take the CWGC details as being more likely to be correct.

Thanks for that Adam.

I had looked through the postings for the memorials on Skye but couldn't find his name on any of them.

After making an initial trip through to Glasgow to try and find one war grave in the Western Necropolis, I've ended up going back umpteen times. I've completed the WN as best I can and have now started on Lambhill. This was more by accident than anything else as it's not really very clear where one cemetery stops and the others start.

Pte. Campbell is the second of two men I've found originating from Skye so rather than just add a few burial details to the threads, I thought I'd add a wee photo. Don't worry though, I won't be bombarding the site with gravestone pictures, I thought it would make a nice change to look at a photo rather than just text. I always try and identify each serviceman/woman I find mentioned on gravestones just to see if there's any further info - even if it's just their age or regiment.

I'm always on the look-out for Stirlingshire men commemmorated or buried in locations outwith the area as I'm working on a 'sort of' Roll of Honour for Stirlingshire and attempting to list as many memorials as each name appears on. Seems to be the case as I'm sure you've noticed, that the same man appears on umpteen different memorials throughout the district.
