Not listed on UKNIWM
I have listed this as a civic memorial because there is no other memorial in the village and the men do not appear on any other memorial.
This memorial is a stained glass window inside the former Beeswing church at OS Map Ref: NX 895 692. The church was sold in 2005 and is currently (June 2007) undergoing conversion to a private residence. The owner/builder was very informative and helpful in granting permission to take the photograph. The memorial is grade C listed and there is a covenant on the deeds that the owner is required to grant access by appointment to anyone wishing to view the memorial.
I have a very strong suspicion that the WW1 memorial (unlisted – so if it exists!) was moved on closure of the church to the village hall but I have yet to confirm this. New Abbey church has taken over responsibility for this congregation and there are no memorials connected with Beeswing in New Abbey Church.

I suspect that this window may be by Douglas Hamilton and am currently seeking confirmation.

It has been confirmed that this window is by Douglas Hamilton.
The church was also known as Lochend church.

The window was unveiled and dedicated on Sunday 5th September 1948. A full report of the unveiling was published in the Galloway News on 11 September 1948. Unfortunately the article does not mention the artist.

The Rev Henry Smith referred to in this memorial was my great uncle. He was beheaded in the Alexandria Hospital massacre at the fall of Singapore. As an army chaplain he chose to stay with bedridden patients when the allies were evacuating. They were bayonetted in their beds. He was killed for protesting. He was 29 years old and married with one child. |

Thank you for posting this information, by a quirk of fate, at the time you wrote this I was giving a talk and this memorial was one of those that I featured. Your Great Uncle is not forgotten and nor is the memorial. |
