Local MP Russell Brown telephoned me on Sunday. I had previously mailed him about Stephen Gilbert with a suggestion that he might like to request that his name be added to the Dumfries war memorial.
I know that Mr Brown is a supporter of the Armed Forces, a regular attendee at Armed Forces Day and Remembrance Day events and I have previously mailed him about the work of this project.
He also told me that Charles Murray (died Afghanistan 8th June 2008) is very unlikely to be added to the Dumfries memorial as one of the parents was against his joining the Army. Mr Brown thought that a memorial tree had been planted in the grounds of the Crichton in Dumfries. I have heard this before and looked for the tree without success - asking a local gardener did not turn anything up, but I will try again.

From The Courier: 5th August, 2010
Nimrod crash victim Flt Sgt Stephen Beattie honoured in Ardler.
More than four years after his death, the name of an Afghanistan war casualty has been added to the war memorial in his village.
Flight Sergeant Stephen Beattie (42), originally from Ardler, was one of 14 servicemen who lost their lives when their Nimrod reconnaissance aircraft crashed.
When aircraft XV230 burst into flames over Kandahar, it represented the largest single-event loss of military personnel since the Falklands War in 1982.
However, Flt Sgt Beattie's name was conspicuous only by its absence on Ardler's war memorial.
It took a concerted campaign by local man Andy Fyall to change all of that.
"Stephen attended Ardler Primary before going on to Blairgowrie High School," he said.
"He was brought up in the village and joined the ATC in Blairgowrie.
"Stephen then got his pilot's licence at Scone, before joining the RAF."
With such a close connection to the village, Mr Fyall insisted Flt Sgt Beattie deserved to be recognised locally.
"I first got in touch with the council in December as I just felt his name should be added to the war memorial in Ardler," he added.
After campaigning for the addition, Mr Fyall admitted he was delighted with his success.
"It is a fitting tribute to Stephen and it is great to finally see his name on the memorial," he said.
"We sent him to war and the least we can do is ensure he is remembered," Mr Fyall added.
A remembrance service will now be held at the memorial in the village at 1pm on August 22.
"Representatives of the ATC in Blairgowrie are set to attend, along with people from RAF Kinloss where Stephen had been based," Mr Fyall said.
More than 600 mourners attended the funeral of Flt Sgt Beattie following his death in Afghanistan.
The doting father of two had been employed as a weapon systems operator and served with 120 Squadron at Kinloss. |

This recent addition will kick me into action again. The Moray Council are prepared - in principal - to add the names of the crew of '230' to appropriate memorials; as has happened with Al Squires in Nairn and now 'BT'. I'll let you know what happens.
RIP CXX/3

I wanted to make sure we had everyone correctly recorded in advance of remembrance day so I did a cross check with the info on the BBC website at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-10629358. I was fortunate in being able to do this in company time as I had a work reason to have a detailed list
Firstle a reminder that the last few names have yet to be added to the main list.
Correction to Robert Thomson, date of death should be 31/01/2004 and not 21st.
Somehow we are missing 3 names:
Phillip Scott from Edinburgh died 5/11/09
Thomas Mason died 25/10/09
John Harrison died 9/9/09
Full details on above link

Thanks Paul, this is a task I've been meaning to do for some time.
I have added the missing names and made the corrections. I 'm sure some more of these men may have been commemorated on local memorials in recent months so if anyone knows of names being added to local memorials and it's not been updated here please let me know.
Thanks

Thanks for the update Paul. I had seen the news earlier about the death but the name had not been released.
