Lieutenant William Keay Falconer Memorial
Location:St John’s Episcopal Church, Junction of Lothian Road and Princes Street, Edinburgh
OS Ref: NT 247 736
This is a terrible photograph and I'm embarrassed to post it. The reason I'm doing it is that I have posted on all the other individual memorials in St John's and if I didn't post this one people might not be aware it is in the church. As soon as a better image is posted this one will be removed.
I can make out some of the inscription:
Erected by the children of this church in loving
remembrance of
William Keay Falconer
(can't make out this line)
Lieut 7th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
(can't make out the rest)
Here is his CWGC entry
Name: FALCONER, WILLIAM KEAY
Initials: W K
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lieutenant
Regiment/Service: Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
Unit Text: 7th Bn.
Age: 20
Date of Death: 25/04/1915
Additional information: Son of William Keay Falconer, J.P., and Margaret More Morrison Keay Falconer, of "Levenbank," Kinross.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: A. 1.
Cemetery: SEAFORTH CEMETERY, CHEDDAR VILLA

I totally agree with the sentiment, much better to have a poor photograph than none at all. I might have one or two blurred smudges myself that have not yet been posted, must check. Knowing roughly what it looks like will also help anyone who goes looking for it, especially in these large churches and cathedrals.

During the war, as in other places, casualty lists were published regularly in the Blairgowrie Advertiser for those with connections in the town.
The following appeared in 1916 under heading:
‘TWO TEARS OF WAR - TOLL IN BLAIRGOWRIE & RATTRAY’ BLAIRGOWRIE
Lieutenant W. Keay Falconer, nephew of Mrs MacIntosh, Allan Street, Blairgowrie, 7th A. & S. Highlanders. |
