Wigtownshire Free Press (7/6/1917): Corpl Jack Slaven, KOSB (son of Mr and Mrs Slaven, Boreland Dairy, Inch) has been awarded the Military Medal for capturing seven Germans, single-handed in a dugout in the attack on Vimy Ridge. Private Slaven enlisted immediately on the outbreak of war and was wounded in action on 12th July 1915. He rejoined his regiment in France thirteen months ago.
and (18/10/1917): At Clearing Station in France, on 6th October, Corpl John Slaven, KOSB, fouth son of Mr and Mrs John Slaven, Boreland, Stranraer.
and (1/11/1917): Mr and Mrs Slaven, Boreland Dairy, Inch, have received official notice that their son, Corporal Jack Slaven, KOSB, died on 6th October from wounds received in action on 5th October. Corporal Slaven, who was 22 years of age, enlisted immediately on the outbreak of war and had been on active service for a long time. He was awarded the Military Medal some months ago for capturing seven Germans, single-handed, in a dugout in the attack on Vimy Ridge.

Wigtownshire Free Press (1/2/1916): Mrs William Smith, Corner House, Lochans, has received official intimation from the War Office that her son, Pte G Smith, 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, was killed in action in the Persian Gulf on 19th ult. When war broke out Pte Smith was with his regiment in India. which was immediately ordered to proceed to France, and he came through some of the several battles fought on the Western Front. In November last he accompanied his regiment to Asia Minor. Private Smith was 26 years of age and had served over seven years in the Army.

Wigtownshire Free Press (26/9/1918): Mr and Mrs Torrance, Innermessan, Stranraer, have received official notice that their eldest son, Private Daniel Torrance, Royal Marine Light Infantry, was killed in action on the Western Front on 2nd inst. Private Torrance, who enlisted on attaining military age, was at that time a university student at Edinburgh, and was a promising young man. He was a former pupil of Stranraer High School. Private Torrance was only 19 years of age, and much sympathy is felt for his parents in their loss. |

Julia MacDonald's book 'The Faithful, the Fallen and the Forgotten' gives him as this man:
17239 Pte Andrew Smith Royal Scots Killed in action 28 May 1917
CWGC gives date of death as above but SNWM gives date of death 28 Apr 1917 as does the Register of Soldiers Effects.
The book also states "Andrew was a gamekeeper and before the war he was living in the kennels in the grounds of Lochinch. In the 1911 census it gives his age as 29 and head of the household."
CWGC gives his age as 34 which is within one year of his age quoted as 29 in 1911.
