Wigtownshire Free Press (8/7/1915): Mrs Kennedy, Barsolus, Stranraer, has received official intimation that her husband, Private William Kilgallen, no 7877, B Company, 1st Battalion, RSF, has died from wounds received in action on 17th June. Private Kilgallen was a National Reservist, having previously served with the Connaught Rangers, and he re-enlisted with the RSF on 27th September. Up to the time of re-enlistment, he was in the employ of Mr JB Chalmers, Barsolus.

Wigtownshire Free Press (10/2/1916): Private James Marchbanks, 1st/5th KOSB, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, was killed in action on 19th December 1915 at Gallipoli. Private Marchbanks was the only son of Mr Marchbanks, gamekeeper, Glenhosie, and, previous to the war, was employed as an underkeeper at Lochinch, Castle Kennedy. He was 24 years of age.

Wigtownshire Free Press (22/8/1918): Mr and Mrs John Martin, Low Barnultoch, Stranraer, have received official intimation that their youngest son, Pte James Martin, Seaforth Highlanders, was killed in action on 23rd July. Pte Martin, who enlisted on 12th July 1915, was only 19 years of age, and had been on active war service in France for thirteen months. Prior to enlisting he was employed as an apprentice blacksmith with Mr John O'Hare, Castle Kennedy.

John was a gamekeeper with Sir R. W. Buchanan Jardine of Castlemilk, St. Mungo. He joined his battalion in Egypt in 1916. (Source: D&G Standard 29/8/1917 p.3 and Medal Roll/Card). Born 1885 in Inch Parish, Wigtownshire. (Source:SNWM and GRoS – Birth Register)

Son of James and Margaret (Glen) McCarlie of Inch, Wigtownshire. (Source: 1891 & 1901 census). Husband of Mary A (Moffat) McCarlie of Barhill Cottage and of Waterside Cottage, Kettleholm, St. Mungo who he married in 1908 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire. (Source: CWGC, D&G Standard 29/8/1917 p.3 and GRoS – Marriage Register)

Killed in Action – 14 August 1917.

Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial

Wigtownshire Free Press (14/6/1917): Mrs McClymont, Balcraig Moor, Portwilliam, has received intimation that her husband, Pte Peter McClymont (son of Mr and Mrs McClymont, Boreland, Glenluce), has been missing since April 28th. Before joining the Army, Pte McClymont was employed by Mr Wm Millar, Cults, Castle Kennedy. Pte McClymont has four brothers serving in the Army.

Wigtownshire Free Press (14/3/1918): Mrs McClymont, Barwinnock Dairy, Portwilliam, (late of Cults, Castle Kennedy), has received official word that her husband, Pte Peter McClymont, Royal Scots, previously reported missing, is now presumed to have been killed on 28th April last. Pte McClymont is a son of Mr and Mrs McClymont, Boreland, Glenluce.

Wigtownshire Free Press (4/11/1915): Mr B McGarrie, Balker Home Farm, has received official intimation that his son, Private James McGarrie, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards, was killed in action on 27th September. Pte McGarrie, who was 19 years of age, enlisted in November last, and after completing his period of training at various centre, proceeded to France with his regiment in May. Prior to joining the Army he was employed at Balker Home Farm. A further communication was received from the Scots Guards Record Office yesterday morning, stating that Private McGarrie was buried between Lone Tree and Chalk Pit Wood, Vermeilles.

Wigtownshire Free Press (8/8/1918): Mr John McHarrie, Culhorn Mains, Stranraer, has received official notice that his youngest son. Pte Henry McHarrie, RSF, who has been missing since 26th September 1917, is now presumed to have been killed on that date. Prior to enlisting Pte McHarrie was in the employment of Mr Stevenson, Kirminnock, Dunragit. Another son of Mr McHarrie's has been missing since 21st March, while one is at present in hospital in England, and one is still on active service in France.

Wigtownshire Free Press (18/10/1917): Intimation has been received by Mr McLagan, schoolmaster, Inchparks, that his son, Pte William McLagan, A and SH, was killed instantaneously in action in France. Pte McLagan volunteered for service early in the war, but was twice rejected by the medical authorities. He was, however, so anxious to do his bit that he was ultimately accepted. It is stated that Pte McLagan met his death while returning to the trenches having carried a wounded man to the first aid station. Prior to the war he was in the employment of Messrs Craig and Kyle, draper, Stranraer.

Further information from the Canadian Great War Project. Date of birth: 22/7/1892. Next of kin: Alexander McMeeken, Aird Farm, Castle Kennedy. Died of wounds. Previously served 2 years in the 5th Battalion, Royal Scots.

The Wigtownshire Free Press (11/7/1918) carried a long report of a Stranraer Town Council meeting presenting a war medal won by L/C McMeeken. Key points are that he was the son of Mr and Mrs Alex McMeeken, Deerpark Cottage, Castle Kennedy. He served two years as a member of the local Territorial Force and left for Canada on 3/6/1910, settling in Solsgirth, Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was three times wounded. He won the Military Medal in April 1917 when he captured, single-handed, 22 Germans at Vimy Ridge.

Wigtownshire Free Press (31/5/1917): Mrs and Mrs McMeekin, Balcraig Moor, Port William (late of Deerpark, Castle Kennedy), have received word that their son, Private Jack McMeekin, serving with the Canadians, has been promoted to lance-corporal, and has also received the Military Medal for bravery on the field. Private McMeekin, who was wounded at St Eloi and Neuve Chapelle, went to Canada seven years ago, and enlisted soon after the outbreak of war.

Wigtownshire Free Press (27/9/1917): Mr and Mrs Neville, Aird, Castle Kennedy, have received official intimation that their son, Pte John Neville, A and SH, was admitted to the 3rd Stationary Hospital, Rouen, suffering from trench fever, and that he has since been removed to the Scottish Hospital, Aberdeen. This is the second time Pte Neville has been invalided home from France.

and (25/4/1918): Mr and Mrs Neville, Aird, Castle Kennedy, have been officially notified that their son, Pte A Neville, HLI, was admitted to hospital suffering from gunshot wounds received in action on 22nd March, and their son, Pte J Neville, A and SH, was also admitted to hospital on 25th March.

and (7/11/1918): Mr and Mrs Neville, Aird, Castle Kennedy, have been officially notified that their son, Pte John Neville, A & SH, attached Black Watch, died of wounds received in action in France on 21st ult. Pte Neville had been over two years on active service, and saw much hard fighting.
