Wigtownshire Free Press (6/1/1944): Mrs Maxwell, Laburnum Cottage, Drummore, has received intimation from the Air Ministry that her grandson, Sgt Pilot Frederick Chas Maxwell, posted missing from an air operation on 5th May 1943, must now be presumed killed on that date, no trace having been found of him. Sgt Maxwell, who was educated at Drummore and Stranraer High School, volunteered for flying duties in the RAF in 1941 at the age of 18 and was called up in July of that year. He received his early training in Texas and gained his wings in August 1942. Prior to enlisting he was in the employ of Mr D Crawford, Drummore, and joined the Home Guard on its formation.

With thanks to Ken Morrison here is a little more info on Sgt Maxwell. His Stirling Bomber took off from RAF Ridgewell near Halstead in Essex for a raid on Dortmund but crashed at Derne, north of the city.

Wigtownshire Free Press: News has been received by Mrs Conlan, Low Drummore Cottages, Drummore, of the death from wounds of her youngest son, Pte Thomas Conlan, KOSB. Pte Conlan was serving in Burma. He was 23 years of age and joined up some time before the outbreak of war. Prior to that he was employed as a farm servant in Kirkmaiden district.

Wigtownshire Free Press (16/7/1942): News has been received of the death on active service of William McAulay, 1st Class Stoker. Aged 27, he was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs William McAulay, Auchneight, Drummore.

HMS Airedale was an escort destroyer and was bombed and heavily damaged by German dive bombers about 90 nautical miles north east of Derna, Libya. As a result of the action she was scuttled. (Source: uboat.net)

Wigtownshire Free Press (31/1/1918): Mrs James W Wilson, Laburnum, Drummore, has been officially informed that her husband, who is a private in the Ayrshire and Lanark Yeomanry Battalion, has been wounded in action in Palestine and been admitted to hospital in Alexandria, Egypt. Prior to enlistment Private Wilson was in the employ of Wigtownshire Creamery Company, Drummore.

Galloway Gazette (26/10/1918): Mrs Wilson, Craig Street, Drummore, has been officially notified that her husband, Lance Corporal James W Wilson, Royal Scots Fusiliers, was killed in action in Flanders on 30 September. Lance Corporal Wilson had seen three years service between Egypt and France. Mrs Wilson has also received a parchment and badge, awarded to her late husband, for gallant conduct and devotion to duty in the field on 12 to 15 August last.

Wigtownshire Free Press (27/1/1916): Private Matthew Nelson McClumpha, 1/5th Royal Scots Fusiliers, son of Mr and Mrs William McClumpha, Glebe Cottage, Stoneykirk (lately of Auchnabrick, Port Logan) was killed in action at the Dardanelles on 30 December 1915. Pte McClumpha was 22 years of age and joined the RSF in September 1914. After undergoing a period of training at Cambusbarron, Stirling, he accompanied the regiment to the Dardanelles in May last, and came through the great battle fought there on 12-13 July. Private McClumpha was married, and leaves a young widow and child, who reside at 12 Millhill Street, Stranraer, to mourn the loss. [The report also carries a photograph of Pte McClumpha].

Pte Eccles had been in the Army over two years and was on active service for the last seven months. Mrs Alexander had also a brother who was killed at Neuve Chappell on March 13, 1915. [The report carries a photograph of Pte Eccles. Note also that his uncle, also James Eccles, is named on the memorial.]

Wigtownshire Free Press (6/9/1917): Official intimation has been received that Pte Thomas Stevenson, attached Cameron Highlanders, died of dysentry at No 18 Stationary Hospital, Salonica, on August 25th. Deceased enlisted in Lovat's Scouts on November 17th 1914 and some time afterwards was attached to the Camerons for regimental transport work. His Company was for some considerable time in England, but in September last year went out to Salonika. He served his apprenticeship to the grocery trade with Mr A McGaw, Drummore, and before joining the Army was engaged as a traveller in Glasgow. He was a nephew of Mr and Mrs T Milligan, Shore Street, Drummore, and a grandson of the late Captain William Stevenson, Drummore.
