George Isles

Hi, I am Ron Isles, my ancestors, (great uncles) Joe and George are named on the Burrelton memorial, Kevin Johnstone advised that Derek R was interested in the name.

Joe was a Sgt in the Border Regt, joined at Carlisle in late 1914 and was killed on 18.11.1916. He is buried at the Lonsdale Cem. He worked for John Menzies and I believe he is commemorated in their head office at Rose St, Edinburgh. I have not verified this. His family worked on the railways and in agricultural equipment. NO association with Hawick that I am aware of. Quite an uncommon name though. The Isles name is most common in Dundee and Fife

George Isles joined the Highland Cyclist Battalion and died in Co Antrim in 1919, at Waveney Millitary Hospital. I have photograph of George but none of Joe. I believe George is buried in Perthshire.

Great info., this is what we are seeking. I have a deep interest in the war memorials of Perthshire and have been posting photos and info.
However, as I mentioned previously, George Isles had completely beaten me - but you have provided the answer. I would be very interested to see the photo of George if you can post it. Any idea (anyone) why he died in Antrim? A John Menzies Memorial also Shocked

I am sure there are Isles (Electical Contractors?) still in Burrelton. My gggg grandmother was a Charlotte Isles. Thanks again.

A quick search on google shoes that Waveney Hospital was converted from the old Ballymena Workhouse. My Duffy's were from Ballymena and in all probability spent some time there themselves. Amazing.

J.McP Isles, Sergeant, Border Regiment is listed in the John Menzies Roll of Honour and is one of 46 men commemorated on the company's Great War memorial. (middle column, third name down)

He is listed as being employed at the Carlisle branch before the war.

There were two John Menzies war memorials unveiled in 1921. One in Edinburgh on 29th November and another copy of the same memorial in Glasgow on 7th December. The Roll of Honour also listes those who left JM to serve in the war.

I looked up John Menzies own website and luckily they have a history section.

It shows a photograph of the Great War memorial and also their Second World War Memorial. There is no mention of the Glasgow memorial though

Astonishing. Just shows what can be gleaned if someone drops in and gives a wee snipppet of info.
Would the John Menzies memorial be on your list for sometime? it looks an interesting plaque. And would it be feasible to post the RoH?

The plan is now to go to Rose Street and see if I can photograph the memorials. I suspect from the angle of the photos on the website that they are one either side of a narrow entrance hall and not very easy to photograph.

The Roll of Honour will have to wait a little while. My scanner went in the bin a couple of months ago and a second hand one passed on by my mother went the same way last weekend. I'll see if I can photograph the photocopies though.

Should have added that George Isles is also commemorated on a memorial at Central Station in Glasgow, he was employed on the railways.

I have tried to post George's picture and poem (eulogy)but can't work out how to do this.??

If anyone wants the picture I can e-mail them. Does anyone know where George is buried?.

Joe is listed on the roll of honour at Carlisle Castle museum, scroll listing men enlisted at inception of Lonsdale Battalion, Border regiment.
