New Luce Memorial Hall

Not listed on UKNIWM

OS Map Ref: NX 175 646

I don’t know if there is a plaque or other information inside the hall – it was locked up when I visited.

I have confirmed that there are no names or plaques inside the hall. The names are listed on the nearby civic memorial.

There is a report of the opening of the memorial hall published in the Wigtownshire Free Press of 25th December 1924 (page 5).

The hall was opened by Mrs William Forster who was well known as one of the greatest sufferers from the war. She was handed the key by the Countess of Stair. This was intended as a memorial for those who returned. The memorial to those who died is 'a little further up the hill' i.e. outside the parish church.

There are two Forsters listed on the Inch memorial but I have a suspicion that the reference was to Mrs Forster's own family and I suspect she may have been a McMeeking. I leave that to another researcher.
