killed in action in Camel B6421
found on GWF:
Lt P McCaig was flying Sopwith Camel B6421 of No 54 Sqn when he was shot down near Cambrai on 27 September 1918. He left on a Special Bombing mission at 1135 (which probably means that his flight was sent out to bomb something in particular, rather than a target of opportunity) and later became involved in combat with 10-12 enemy aircraft; B6421 was last seen spinning out of control from 2000 feet at about 1210hrs.
Three German fighter pilots were credited with a victory which may be B6421:
Ltn Hermann Vallendor of Jasta 2;
Ltn Fritz Rumey of Jasta 5; and
Ltn Ernst Bormann of Jasta 2. |

Richard Telford was a draper and was listed as a Sergeant in "E" Company of the 5th Reinforcements to the 1st Battalion when they left Wellington in April 1916. His next of kin is shown as his wife Mrs. A. B. Telford of the Schoolhouse, Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire. Richard and Alexina Robertson had married there in 1910 so it looks like she came home when her husband enlisted. _________________ Ken |

Or he may have travelled to New Zealand on his own for work between 1910 and 1914 (or whenever he enlisted).

You could well be right Adam. There is a Richard Telford (b.1875 - so the age matches) who sailed from Liverpool to Australia (Adelaide) in 1914. He appears to have been unaccompanied. _________________ Ken |

Richard Telford is not listed in 'The faithful, the fallen and the forgotten', Julia MacDonald's recent book on the memorials of this area.

Adam posted these details from SNWM on page 1:
McCULLOCH, David
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots Fusiliers
Unit Text: 12th (Ayr and Lanark Yeomanry) Bn.
Date of Death: 08/12/1917
Service No: 295353
Place of birth: Maybole, Ayrshire
Grave/Memorial Reference: X. 56.
Cemetery: JERUSALEM WAR CEMETERY, Israel
The AIY on the memorial would be the old title of this unit, The Ayrshire Imperial Yeomanry
In spite of the place of birth (Maybole) I suspect that this man is the same DAVE McCULLOCH who is named on the Whithorn Memorial.
The parents, John McCulloch and Annie Wither, married in Stoneykirk in 1878 and lived there (with lots of children) until the late 1900s.
In 1911 they had moved to Craig Farm Cottage near Whithorn where John was a shepherd. The older children, including David (18.) worked on the farm. The others were at school including the youngest Alexander (8.) _________________ Ken |

Thanks Ken. We've certainly seen it many times before that men are listed on more tha one civic memorial. Perhaps some members of the extended McCulloch family still lived in the area after the First World War for David's name to be included?

Adam - you could well be correct. There are McCullochs under every bush in these parts.
Note too that the last name on the main panel of the memorial is Pte J. Wither - same as David McCulloch's mother. _________________ Ken |
