Galloway Gazette (26/1/1946): Official intimation has been received by Mrs Arnott, Ardwell, Stranraer, that her husband, Sgt John Arnott, Royal Corps of Signals, who had been a prisoner of war of the Japanese since the fall of Malaya, died on 24th August 1945, in Adam Road Camp, Singapore. Sgt Arnott was with the Post Office Engineering Department before the war, and earlier had been a driver in the service of Messrs Murray & Sons, Stranraer. He was well known in football circles.

Wigtownshire Free Press (12/12/1940): Fears that Peter HC Nelson, Stranraer, had been drowned were confirmed on Thursday when his body was recovered at Portrodie. Nelson, who was employed by the LMS, had his home at 43 John Simpson Drive. He had been missing for six days and was last seen on the pier waiting to go aboard a small vessel. It is thought that he fell into the water during the blackout. The funeral took place on Saturday.

Before going on service he was employed with Messrs J & T McWilliam, Lochans. Previously he was employed as a plumber with Messrs K McLauchlan & Sons, Charlotte Street.

Wigtownshire Free Press (10/8/1944): Official news has been received by Mr and Mrs VF Dicks, Hannover Street, Stranraer, of the death on active service of their son, Lieut Peter Dicks, of the Fleet Air Arm. Lieut Dicks had seen considerable service in Arctic waters and in the Indian Ocean. He joined the ATC when the Stranraer squadron was formed in March 1941, and was the first Flight Sergeant. Joining the RAF in September 1942 he received part of his training in this country and afterwards went to Canada where he took his wings, occupying first place in the course when passing out. Lieut Dicks, who was 21 years of age, was married in May this year. When he left the High School in 1939 he was intermediate dux medallist. At Monday night's parade of No 1133 Squadron the Commanding Officer referred to the death of Lieut Dicks and spoke of him as one of the best Cadets they had ever had. He was called upon to fill a difficult task but he discharged when he was made senior NCO while all his friends were in the ranks but he discharged his duties with notable thoroughness and efficiency. Lieut Dicks had set an example that all cadets might follow.

Wigtownshire Free Press (6/5/1943): Official news has been received by Mrs H Irving, 55 Murrayfield Ave, Stranraer, that her son, Sergt JBM Irving (air gunner), has been posted missing while taking part in operations. Sergeant Irving joined the RAF in August 1941 and has taken part in many operational flights. As a lad of 14 he entered the service of the Post Office in Stranraer. Later he was in Paisley and returned to Stranraer Post Office before joining the RAF. He was twenty-two on the day prior to the date on which he was reported missing. His father is serving as a sergeant in the Royal Corps of Signals.

Wigtownshire Free Press (2/11/1943): Official intimation has been received that Sergt James Irving, RAFVR, Stranraer, who was posted missing in April, is now presumed dead. Sergt Irving, who was an air-gunner, was the son of Sergt and Mrs H Irving, 55 Murrayfield Avenue. He was 21 years of age, and was in the Post Office service from the time he left school until he enlisted in 1941.

Wigtownshire Free Press (11/11/1943): A telegram has been received by Mr and Mrs T Boyd, 37 Marine Gardens, Stranraer, stating that their son, Bombardier James Boyd, Royal Horse Artillery, has been killed in action in Italy. Bombardier Boyd joined the Militia in July 1939, and saw service in France, coming through the Dunkirk evacuation. He went to North Africa early in 1942, and served with the Eighth Army until they reached Tripoli, where he was severely wounded. He was eight months in hospital, and after a short period at the base he returned to the fighting. His younger brother, Edward, who was serving with the Paratroops, was taken prisoner in Tunis last winter and was quartered in Italy until August, but since then there has been no news of him. [Note: a later edition of the Free Press states that he escaped to Switzerland]. Bombardier Boyd, who was 25, was a fireman with the LMS Railway Company before joining the Army.

Wigtownshire Free Press (9/12/1943): Lieutenant AC Lock, son of Sergt Major Lock and Mrs Lock, County Buildings, Stranraer, is officially reported to have been wounded in fighting on the Burma border. It is two years since Sergeant Lock went overseas. He joined the Black Watch on leaving High School, after the outbreak of war, and soon rose to the rank of Sergeant. He was subsequently given a commission in the Indian Army and was serving with the Gurkha Regiment.

Wigtownshire Free Press (22/6/1944): Captain A C Lock of the Gurkha Rifles, son of Sgt Major and Mrs Lock, County Buildings, Stranraer, has been killed in action in Burma. It will be remembered that Captain 9then Lieutenant) Lock was wounded towards the end of last year. Soon after leaving Stranraer High School in the summer of 1940 Captain Lock joined the Black Watch. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and subsequently volunteered to serve in the Indian Army. He left this country in September 1941 and after attending an Officer Training School in India was posted to the Gurkha Rifles, with whom he had considerable service in Burma. He had been back with his battalion only a fortnight when he was killed. Prior to joining the Army he was a troop leader in the Boy Scouts, and for a time was a member of the Boys Brigade. At school he took an active part in outdoor sport especially rugby and tennis. Quiet and genial he was well liked by all who knew him.
