Private 7870 George BROWN, Scots Guards.
Born Keith, father William, mother Annie of Burnside Cottage, Newmill, Keith. Two elder brothers William & Keith, six younger brothers John, James, Harry, Robert, Andrew and Thomas.
He served as a police constable with Liverpool Police then resigned and enlisted at Fort George on 24.3.1911 for service with the Scots Guards, he was allocated the regimental number 7870. He was aged 20 years 9 months, occupation police constable, height 6'2, gave his next of kin as above. Initially posted to 2nd Battalion, on 22.3.1912 went to Egypt with 1st Battalion returning to UK 2.1.1913. Transferrd to army reserve 24.3.1914.
30.5.1914 Applied for service with Durham County Constabulary, he was living at Blackhill, Consett, Co Durham. At this time he was a married man, gave his occupation as shoemaker.
Appointed to DCC 15th June 1914 as PC971, 3rd class constable.
29.6.1914 Stationed Bishop Auckland living at Oxford Terrace. His first child was born a few weeks after his departure to France.
5.8.1914 Recalled to the colours, mobilized London into 1st Battalion on the 6th.
27.8.1914 Entered France where he was involved in the thick of the fighting right from the beginning of the war.
11.11.1914 Army papers marked, 'Reported missing' on this date and that he died on or since 11.11.1914. Later added KIA near Soissons, Belgium by a rifle bullet, his pocket book and papers were pierced, the bullet having evidently gone clean through.
Commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) war memorial, DCC war memorial, Aykley Heads, Durham and Keith war memorial.
I have a small photograph of him taken from a newspaper, I will upload this at a future date.

Pte Geo Brown, Scots Guards is also commemorated on the nearby Newmill Parish War Memorial
