Name: LORIMER, JAMES
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Service Number: 14103
Regiment/Service: Scots Guards, 2nd Bn
Date of Death: 25/9/1916
Age: 27

Memorial: Thiepval Memorial
Also named on Peebles War Memorial.
In his book, "Life and Times in the Upper Tweed Valley", Andrew Lorimer, who spent much of his life in the area, recalls recalls his brother, Jim's, last visit home: "... my brother Jim had joined the Scots Guards, a regiment so depleted that most of the new recruits had to be found south of the Border. After much intensive training it was fairly evident that the regiment was intended for what was spoken of as 'the great push' and Jim came home on a short leave. He had brought with him two 'double' records. The first had 'Roses of Picardy' on one side and 'Genevieve' on the other. The second was entirely different with Mendelssohn's 'Spring Song' and Schubert's 'Serenade'. Avoiding going out to meet former acquaintances, Jim spent much of his time playing his favourite records over and over again and holding long, quiet conversations with my mother, which I was not allowed to share. Looking back, it was evident that he did not expect to return from France, a premonition that proved only too true, and he did not survive the bloody battlefield slaughter of the Somme. Somehow the gramaphone lost its appeal as it evoked too many memories and after Jim's death was not brought out so often."

In his book, "Life and Times in the Upper Tweed Valley", Andrew Lorimer, who spent much of his life in the area, recalls recalls William Thorburn: "At Hearthstane [Lorimer's home farm] we came face to face quite soon with the sadness and sacrifices which had to be endured. Our employer's eldest son, Billy Thorburn, was in Canada on a sheep ranch when the call for volunteers was made. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force at once and arrived at Hearthstane on embarkation leave. We boys admired his uniform and the ease with which he spoke to everyone and looked forward to the time he would take over the farm. It seemed that he had hardly left for France before the news came that he had been killed in action. The rest of the Thorburn family were soon involved, with Jamie flying, Robert at sea and Vincent in the army."
