Not much to say about this one. This was taken fairly early on a Sunday morning, while out for a drive with my daughter.

I'll post close-ups of the names later.

CWGC WORLD WAR ONE ENTRIES:
These are some of the CWGC Entries for the WWI names listed on the memorial. Unfortunately as the memorial only gives the name of the casualty with no additional details there is some ambiguity. I have taken those entries which specifically give an address in the Giffnock area as correct. Some of the others I have listed as probable or possible as they seem very likely to be correct. There are some names which have no entry against them as they either have no entry on the CWGC site or there is not enough detail on the CWGC entry to be certain that this is the right person. Hopefully with more research these points will be confirmed.

Binnie David Willis

Unit Text: 9th (Glasgow Hdrs.) Bn.
Age: 21
Date of Death: 27/05/1917
Additional information: Son of David Dreghorn Binnie, M.A., LL.B., and Barbara Manson Eadie Binnie, of Elwine, Giffnock, Glasgow. Educated at Warriston School, Moffat, and Glasgow Academy.

He obtained his commission in June 1915.'

The War Diary of the 9th Battalion H.L.I. includes the following entry for the 27th May 1917:
[27 May 1917: front line northeast of Croisilles]
Orders for attack are issued from French headquarters. The task [given] to the Battalion was as follows:
I. As soon as objective TUNNEL TRENCH (new name for HINDENBURG SUPPORT LINE) was reached and "mapped up", C Coy of the Glasgow Highlanders was to co-operate in a bombing attack along NELLY LANE communication trench with 2nd RW Fusiliers who were to advance along tunnel trench with their bombing attack. This didn’t materialise.
II. From zero onwards all Coys Glasgow Highlanders and 1 Coy 20th RF were to support the advancing troops with Lewis Gun and rifle fire; this was successful in so far as the targets that presented themselves were quickly dealt with by our men.
III. To push our patrols as soon as the advance started in order to jump into TUNNEL trench the moment it was evacuated so as to deny it to the enemy once he left it. This did not take place. Our patrols crawled out and got all the information needed, that is, the attack had not succeeded. The attacking battalions had got mixed up with our barrage and had to come back to our lines.
During the operation our casualties were 2/Lt Binnie killed and 6 other ranks, and 15 other ranks wounded. The battle commenced at 1.55pm and was over by 3.50pm. During the bombardment of enemy’s front line we withdrew our right Coy from vicinity of the HUMP.

Hay David (possible?)
Unfortunately there is not much information on this man at present. There is an item in The Scotsman newspaper, 17/07/1915, p.11:
GIFFNOCK - Dvid Hay, 2nd R.S.F., has been admitted to Lochee Hospital, Dundee, wounded on the left arm and both legs. Private Hay, who is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Hay, New Braidbar, Giffnock, was also wounded in December'
There does not appear to be any listing on the CWGC or SNWM databases to match. There is however a death entry on the Scotland's People Website for a David Hay, aged 29, who died in Dundee in 1916. It seems likely this could be the same man who was admitted to the hospital in Dundee.

‘SPORTING NOTES…
J.G.S. FORREST
Rugby men everywhere will have read with deep regret of the death in action of that grand Scots international three-quarter J.G.S. Forrest, R.N. Air Arm. No matter whether he was in the centre or on the wing, every time he pulled more than his weight. I saw his Freshman’s match at Cambridge. He was not in either team as they lined out but, upon a centre having to go off crocked, Forrest came on to take his place. It was seen in the twinkling of an eye that Cambridge had here a “find”. He never looked back, got his Blue as a Fresher, and from that, my first view of him to my last when I saw him get a try “in a hundred” last year at Taunton he never gave a bad or a poor game in my seeing. He and H.D. Freakes, the two mighty opposites in a well-remembered tackle in a Varsity match, when both were in the centre have now made the great sacrifice, lamented by all who ever knew them or only saw them play.

‘HEROIC SURGEON
“Death” Jump Saved
81 Patients
SCOT AWARDED D.S.C.
Half a gale was blowing and it was bitterly cold as two British warships slowly drew closer together in heaving mid-ocean seas. Both were covered with ice. On one, a convoy escort ship, 81 men survivors from the destroyer Achates lay wounded. On the other, a destroyer, a Naval Surgeon Lieut. stood poised on the ice-bound deck. At exactly the moment that the vessels were as close as they could possibly get in the gale – and they could only remain in that position for a matter of seconds – the doctor sprang. One slip either in taking off or in landing would almost certainly have meant his death. The ships were heaving and plunging in the swell. He made the jump safely.
For the next 30 hours after his hazardous feat the surgeon operated without a break on the wounded. Many of them were seriously injured. His operating table was the seamen’s mess-deck table. And throughout those 30 hours two ratings supported him as he worked – so that he could keep a steady hand as the ship pitched and rolled. Not one of the 81 patients was lost.
RISKED LIFE TO SAVE OTHERS
The story of the heroic doctor who risked his life to save others was officially told last night with the announcement in the London Gazette of the award of the D.S.C. to Surgeon Lieut. Maurice John Hood, R.N.V.R. of Giffnock, Renfrew. He made his dramatic leap last winter while on convoy escort duty. The award, says the Gazette, is “for courage, endurance, and great skill in attending the wounded when H.M.S. Achates was lost.”
The official report of the Commanding Officer of the ship stated :- “He was tireless in his devotion to duty, and after he had finished his operations he was in constant attention to his patients. His work casts a brilliant reflection on the medical branch of the Service.”
When the signal was received from the escort vessel asking for medical attention for the injured men, icing conditions made it impossible to get seaboats away from either ship. Skilful navigation got the ships alongside, but wind and swell made it highly dangerous for them to remain together for more than a matter of seconds. Surgeon Lieut. Hood never hesitated for one of those precious seconds. He jumped without thought for his own safety.
Surgeon Lieut. Hood graduated in 1941 M.B., Ch.B., at Glasgow University.
[H.M.S. Achates (1330 tons), whose loss was announced in January this year fought gallantly against a much heavier German cruiser before she went down protecting a Russia-bound convoy in the Arctic.]’

‘GALLANT SCOTS DOCTOR
Died While Helping Seamen
U-BOAT ATTACK ON
FREIGHTER
An 18-years-old U.S. naval reserve seaman is alive today through the heroic efforts of a young medical R.N.V.R. officer, who transferred from a British destroyer to a merchant ship to save the life of the American, who was critically ill with appendicitis, remained on board the freighter rather than involve other men in the risk of effecting a return to the destroyer, and died while assisting in the evacuation of the crew when the freighter was sunk by a U-boat three days later.
The British officer was Surgeon Lieutenant Maurice John Hood of Giffnock. It was the second time in his brief career in the Royal Navy that he had risked his life to save others. Previously during half a gale he jumped from the ice-coated deck of his destroyer to that of another destroyer to attend 81 men wounded in action. For that he was awarded the D.S.C.
“He was a fine brave man,” said the American whose life he saved, Seaman Harold C. Hazard, of Syracuse, New York.
Admiral Harold R. Stark, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in Europe stated in a letter to the officer’s sister, Miss Edith Hood: “He gave his life to save another under circumstances when it would have been so easy to have saved his own.”
REMAINED ABOARD
When the freighter was torpedoed, Hazard was thrown out of bed on to the deck. He was taken to the boat deck where he inquired for Surgeon Lieutenant Hood, who had not appeared on deck. “From what I heard from other members of the crew, Surgeon Lieutenant Hood remained aboard to assist in the evacuation of the crew, especially those in the engineroom, where one of the torpedoes hit,” said Hazard.
Surgeon Lieutenant Hood, who was 25, was a son of Mr. And Mrs. Colin Hood, of Bulloch Gardens, Giffnock. He was a keen Rugby player while attending Glasgow Academy and Glasgow University, and played in inter-city matches. In 1941 he graduated M.B., Ch.B., and was a house doctor at Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow, for a short time prior to being called up for service in the Navy about 18 months ago.’

‘GLASGOW SHIP SUNK
Captain and Arab Fireman dead
34 RESCUED
The master, captain Gavin Raleigh Logan, of Roathpark, Hillview Drive, Clarkston, Glasgow, and an Arab fireman names Abdi lost their lives when the steamer Baron Aisla (3656 tons), of Glasgow, sank after an explosion in the North Sea on Saturday.
The bodies of the two men, with the 34 other members of the crew, were landed at an east Coast port on Saturday night.
When the explosion occurred the ship sank so rapidly that a member of the crew named Baker, who was on the look-out at the masthead, was unable to get to the deck before she settled down.
All the crew with the exception of the five men, including the captain and the Arab fireman, got away in a boat. These five had to jump into the war(typo), and, although they were picked up, the captain was found to be dead, and the Arab fireman died later. The other three recovered after being in a boat for about an hour.
PICKED UP BY NAVAL TRAWLER
The survivors were picked up by a naval trawler.
The Baron Ailsa was built in 1936 by Lithgow’s Ltd., Port Glasgow. She was owned by the Kelvin Shipping Co., Ltd. (H. Hogarth & Sons, managers), and her port of registry was Ardrossan.
The Chief Officer, Mr. Blackwood, of Glasgow said “We had three apprentices on board, and when they got into the boat they started singing the ‘Volga Boatmen’ to keep up their spirits.”
Ralph Brown, the carpenter, of Newcastle, saw his shipmate, able seaman Joseph Morgan of Barry, who was unable to swim, in the water. Brown jumped from the boat, and helped to keep Morgan afloat until they were both picked up by the other men.
Captain Logan, who was 42 years of age, was thrice torpedoed in the last war, and on each occasion he escaped unhurt. He is survived by his wife. Captain Logan was educated at Queen’s Park Secondary school, Glasgow, and served his apprenticeship with a city firm of shipowners. Twenty years ago he joined the Hogarth Line, his first command being the Baron Murray. He was afterwards captain of the Ruthven, and three years ago he was transferred to the Baron Ailsa.
A relative stated that Captain Logan was a powerful swimmer, and it was thought that he must have been injured.’

A photograph of Captain Logan's grave in Eastwood Cemetery can be seen at the bottom of the page here:

The effort was intended to strike at the enemy lines of communications in Northern Norway and Finland. Operation "EF" entailed the passage of the high-speed minelayer, HMS Adventure to Archangel with a large load of mines, while the air groups of the two carriers struck at the presumed concentration of shipping in the two northern ports used by Nazi Gebirgs Korps Norge. The two strikes were from HMS Furious and Victorious on Petsamo and Kirkenes respectively on 30 July 1941.
The strike on Kirkenes was a disaster and the Luftwaffe were waiting. The attack on Kirkenes involved HMS Victorious dispatching 12 Albacores from 827 sqdn, eight Albacores from 828 sqdn, and nine Fulmars from 809 sqdn in two sub-flights. The defences were fully alerted, and the Luftwaffe's Bf-109s and Bf-110s were already in the air for aerial defence.

Jim

You’ve got a lot of names identified there and a few more probably only need extra confirmation using databases like SDGW and SNWM. It’s always a lot harder when you’ve only got the names to work on.

From your research I take it this memorial covers Clarkston as well as Giffnock? We should maybe change the title.

It’s interesting to see that according to the details passed on by the families of those listed these two places are located in Glasgow or Renfrewshire or Lanarkshire.

Just to confuse matters further under the current boundaries Giffnock is within the City of Glasgow and Clarkston is in East Renfrewshire.

I think you have got the right details for the WW2 name A.G. Steele. It’s not unusual for an initial to be missing on the CWGC database. Unfortunately the SNWM or Armed Forces Memorial databases don’t have Flight Sergeant Steele listed to give us more information.

It seems strange that the last two named, Temple and Barr, shouldn’t be included but I’m sure there was a valid reason at the time. They are listed here at least.

These are SNWM details which may confirm some names for you. I’ve only had a chance to look up the WW2 A-D names on the database but a good look through and another cross-reference against the CWGC database may confirm some more.

Hello Adam,
Thanks for the help, much appreciated. I posted the CWGC entries as what I thought might be a good basis to make a start and hope to work away on further research with cross checking etc. and adding what I can to each name. I also intend to do the same with the other East Renfrewshire and Glasgow memorials in my area.
As I said I included names that I felt fairly sure were correct but left out others. I thought it best to post all the names first though, at least now I feel committed to work at it and try to get confirmations.
As far as I know the memorial is officially the Giffnock memorial so the name is correct but there does seem to be a lot of spill over with names from Newlands, Netherlee, Muirend, Thornliebank, Eastwood and Shawlands (both sides of the city boundary). I'm sure once I get started I'll find some names also listed on the Newton Mearns, Thornliebank and Eaglesham war memorials and I'll add links.
I'm also intending to visit the church and library over the holidays to see if they have a book of remembrance or any further details.
All the best.
Jim

Just looking at the number of Great War names and number of Second World War names I take it between the wars Giffnock changed from being a village on the outskirts of Glasgow to being a suburb of Glasgow?

Hi

I can supply some information on Dugald G. Wood. This is my uncle Dugald Gillies Wood, who was the eldest son of John Stewart and Elizabeth Joss Wood. They lived at 28 Monteith Gardens, Stamperland, Clarkston and my uncle Dugald was a Wireless Operator with 199 Squadron (Bomber Command) at Lakenheath. He was killed, aged 23, when operating to Hanover on 27 September 1943 in a Short Stirling Mk. 3 bomber and he is buried in Hanover War Cemetery. His crew were on their 13th operation and had previously carried out two sea mining operations and bombing operations to Peenemunde, Berlin (twice), Munchengladbach, Mannheim (twice), Nuremburg, Hanover, Modane and Montlucon.

Best wishes

Douglas

He may have went by his middle name Douglas, like many people do, when it's the same name as their father.

"Killed on active service, September 1940, Sergeant Douglas Cooper, R.A.F. aged 22 years, dearly beloved younger son of Mr & Mrs J.D. Cooper, Glenbranter, 11 Ruthven Avenue, Giffnock, Glasgow."

(Glasgow Herald 17th September 1945)
"Proudly honouring the memory of Sergeant Douglas Laing Cooper W/O A/G Bomber Command, accidentaly killed 17th September 1940, beloved younger son of Mr & Mrs J.D. Cooper, Glenbranter, 11 Ruthven Avenue, Giffnock."
