These memorials were a total surprise - glimpsed as I drove along the B7059. There is a ruined mediaeval church there and a newer one which carries these memorials. 'Newlands' is not even mentioned on the O.S. map but it is situated about a mile from Romannobridge, Tweeddale.

The case of James Souter might remain a mystery for the foreseeable future.
Dr Gunn's Book of Remembrance has him listed as William Souter who died in 1917.

Hi Derek,
He was staying with his brother-in-law so it is certainly possible.
I couldn't get onto the SNWM site earlier. Kept telling me it was locked out. |

Have you seen this website from the Border Family History Society?

Looks like a lot of research has already been done on these men.
Kindest Regards. _________________ 'Lest We Forget'

William Souter was also known as James and was born in Forfar. Jack Davidson was a meteorologist working for the RAF. He was on a plane flying from Tain to Leuchars when it crashed at Balmullo Quarry in Fife in very bad weather conditions. He is buried in West Linton cemetery in Peeblesshire. |
