The Fraserburgh war memorial takes the form of a tall grey granite pedestal supporting the allegorical sculpture of 'Justice Guiding Valour' by Edinburgh sculptor Alexander Carrick. The commemorations and names of the WWI dead are listed on bronze panels set onto the faces of the pedestal, while the names of the WWII dead are listed on slim panels set into the projecting pillars which buttress the corners of the pedestal. The Fraserburgh memorial was unveiled on the 12th of September 1923.

The monument stands on the South Road at the gate of the James Ramsay Park on the outskirts of the town.

More information on the sculptor can be found at the website:
www.alexandercarrick.webeden.co.uk
The following three photographs are supplied and re-produced by kind permission of Stan Bruce.

Above - 'Justice' guides youthfull 'Valour' with a light touch of her hand.
Below - My own photograph taken some years ago when the sculpture had been give a 'wet look' coat of polyurethane. Thankfully this has been removed and the rich green patina of the bronze has now been restored.

Below - A photograph of one of my old postcards showing how the Fraserburgh memorial would originally have appeared in the 1920's and 30's. Its easy to forget how much greater an impact many of these memorials would have had when originally erected. They tend to become lost these days among the traffic signs, railings, bollards and all the other items of street architecture which are flourishing in the modern townscape.
