The Scotsman, Monday 27th June 1921, Page 5.
"Longcroft
An obelisk in grey granite erected at The Sheddings, Longcroft, to commemorate the Dennyloanhead, Haggs Parish, Banknock and Allandale men who fell in the war, was unveiled by His Grace the Duke of Montrose, K.T., Lord Lieutenant for the county. On the obelisk are the names of 86 men. Rev. Alexander Macara paid tribute to the memory of the fallen." |

Lance Corporal William Welsh (A & S Highlanders) on the WWI section of this memorial was the Uncle of William Welsh in the WWII section. Both men were born at Braeface near Banknock and they were killed at almost the same age. William Welsh (WWI) has an empty grave in Kilsyth Cemetery which was a tribute from his wife Lilas. His nephew has a similar grave in Denny and Dunipace Cemetery which was a memorial by his mother.
I am sure there are other families in the region who have a very similar story of sacrifice in both the World Wars. |
