When I joined on 18th January I, rather discourteously I have to admit, did not say ‘Hello’ mainly because I had nothing to offer; Scottish War Memorials being a rarity down here on the South Coast, if any. However “Spoons” gave me a little push a few days ago and I have just made my first post under Aberdeenshire (Monymusk).
My main interest is in recording Female and Chaplain casualties of WWI and more recently adding WW2, primarily as my own personal commemoration and remembrance of those unfortunate individuals and I am most grateful to the membership for the photographs now gracing the records of some of my casualties. The ultimate resting place for my records will be, hopefully, an appropriate archive.
My only connection with Scotland was my uncle, like myself a first generation Englishman, both our roots being Ireland. He joined the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders way back in 1934 and saw service in the Palestine campaign and purchased his discharge in 1938. In 1940 he re-enlisted into The Liverpool Scottish and subsequently the 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. He arrived in Italy on 19th January 1944 and on 10th March he sustained mortal wounds from mortar fire, 1000 yards from the summit of Point 593, overlooking the Monastery at Cassino, and died on his way to the Advanced Dressing Station.
My everlasting memory of him was in 1935 when the Cameron’s were in London for the Silver Jubilee celebrations and to take part in the Aldershot Tattoo. He visited us and took me down to the sweet shop to buy some sweets. I can, even now, sense the tingle of pride walking down the road with this ‘Scottie’ in his full walking-out uniform.
If anybody knows of a Cameron War Memorial with the name of Sergeant John Vincent Murphy on it I would be grateful.
I forgot, I do have another memory of Scotland – 1953 I think – watching England and Scotland at Hamden Park – dare I say it? We won 4 – 1.
Hope I have not bored you but that is my introduction
Cheers.
Tony

Tony

Welcome to the forum, I hope you can find plenty of information for your project on the forum.

Sgt Murphy will be commemorated in the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle. There used to be a copy of the same Roll of Honour for the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders in the Garrison Church in Fort George near Inverness.

As the home of the museum of the Queen's Own Highlanders it had the Seaforth's and Cameron's Rolls of Honour there. I'm sure it will still be there.

Regards

Adam

Adam

Thanks for your welcome. I will make contact with both the museum and SNWM to ascertain my chances of a photograph.

Regards

Tony
