I was curious about the high number of Second World War deaths compare to the Great War deaths. I checked the two women named first. One was in the WAAF but Elizabeth Harper was a civilian casualty in Plymouth.

There are quite a few distinctive names and it has been easy to find names in the CWGC database by comparing them against the SNWM database which are likely candidates for those listed here.
As expected for this part of Aberdeenshire Gordons, RAF and Navy (Merchant and Royal) figure. There are a lot of men lost as prisoners of war of the Japanese after being captured with 2nd Bn Gordons (and one with the RASC). I wonder why so many Lumphanan men served in the 2nd Bn?

I came across the Banff and Buchan Arts Forum website this evening. it has an entry for Lumphanan War memorial. They are Interested in the memorial rather than those named but it contains a description of the memorial and its date of unveiling.
http://www.bbaf-arts.org.uk/sites/bbaf/art-in-env/artefactdetails.asp?ArtefactNum=354
I'll try and see if they have other memorials listed.

The detail is taken from the Aberdeenshire Council website Sites and Monuments Record. I do not think the memorial is white marble at all but is, in fact, granite _________________ Jim

Here are some details from Jim McGinlay which were posted in a duplicate entry for Lumphanan. Jim asked me to delete his post but I think it's worth posting his photographs and transcription:
UKNIWM Ref No. 8603
The Lumphanan war memorial takes the form of a grey granite tablet set into a wall of grey granite rustic blocks with pedimented top.
The memorial stands at the road junction at the foot og Glen Road.
