I think I can safely say that we are all pleased at how far this forum has come in a short time.
As it, hopefully, continues to grow and develop it will, as I think I said back in the day, become THE place for information on all our War Memorials. Memorialman said recently
Quote:
Keep up the good work. This is a superb piece of work.

We now have 107 registered users enjoying the benefits the site provides BUT those submitting/posting still seems quite 'narrow'.
Surely there are folk out there with cameras who could do a bit. Certainly in the areas we are short on. But what more can be done to highlight and encourage this?
I enjoy doing this very much...... but the more the merrier and lighter the load!

I would like to add that anyone who wants to contribute, even in a small way, but is not sure how - could ask the mods what needs doing in their area - I know I have a list of churches in my area so even someone without a camera could confirm if there are memorials inside the church or not.

Yes, it certainly seems that there is a small core of half-a-dozen dedicated snappers here and little input from other sources.
Hopefully once word spreads, we will pick up a few more interested parties. However, I'm disappointed that we haven't had more input from members of the WFA and Great War Forum etc but perhaps we're meant to be wee goldfish content in our own bowl rather than be small fry in a big tank.
I'd also like to think that in time we'll pick up interested school classes, local history societies and churches who will concentrate on their particular memorial. Fingers crossed anyway.

What I am very happy about is the number of memorials we've already covered and the sheer detail and information that we've broadcast. Superb.

One area in which all members could help is by publicising this forum on other forums by adopting a signature link on their respective profiles wherever. I believe that David and myself have adopted this path on the Great War Forum.

I agree with both Derek and Spoons. So lets keep hammering away and hope others chip in.
I KNOW that family history/genealogy are becoming very popular. I KNOW what it still means to families of the fallen. I'm sure that there are many, many people who can post pics and detail of their relatives to keep their memory alive.
I don't know if now is the time given that their are things in the pipeline but we might be underestimating how important this work is.
I think there should be a bit in some of our national newspapers promoting this, I really do.
Again, the boss is going to have to offer opinion on this.

I should also add that we may be looking for helpers with something other than photographs. Hopefully I'll be able to tell you more next week.

Oops, I forgot to do mine, sorry Derek.

You've got to remember that we've only been on the go for a few months. Yes, there seems to be a hard-core of regular posters but I think we'll start seeing more genealogists and local historians adding information as word spreads of the forum.

I just had a PM from such a member today who hasn't posted yet but will hopefully post a lot of information on the memorial they have been researching.

Perhaps once people join to add information about 'their' memorials they may decide to find a few more around about to photograph and add to the forum.

In the short term though I think we need to try and publicise the forum to interested parties in places like Ayrshire, Fife, Angus and the North-East and try and increase our posts from those areas.

Regards

Adam

I couldn't agree more. Areas such as the Borders and D&G have been well documented so far but other areas of the country haven't been so fortunate.
We could always evict dhubthaigh and Spoons from their particular areas and drop them elsewhere in Scotland if things don't pick up. Wink

Well I have just bought a house in St John's Town of Dalry and that is only 40 minutes from Ayr so I expect to 'collect' memorials in South West Ayrshire starting in June.

What dedication to the cause. That leaves Dhubthaigh househunting in Fife, Angus or the North-East then.

Cheers

I suggest we drop Dhubthaigh over the North-east and tell him to work his way south. Surprised

What do you mean move someone to the North East to take photo's!

I'm doing my best - it is a 10 hour drive from Innsworth!

I promise I'll try harder when I move north in Aug/Sep.

Wink
