DAVID G. PATTERSON.
David Graham Patterson – age 21 – Private (2549 & 240806) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was educated at Goudhurst, Cranbrook in Kent and enlisted in November 1914. He joined his battalion in Egypt in 1916 and served in Palestine. He died of pneumonia in the 24th Stationary Hospital at Kantara in Egypt.
Born 1896 in Chesham, Amersham, Buckinghamshire. Son of the late David Graham Patterson of Chesham, Buckinghamshire and of Carruthers, Middlebie, and of Williamina Byers (Park) Patterson of Burn Grange, Ecclefechan, Hoddom, Dumfriesshire.
Died on Active Service on 8 August 1917 and buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Middlebie Parish War Memorial, on the Waterbeck Church memorial and the Lockerbie War Memorial.


WILLIAM B. PORTEOUS.
William Beattie Porteous – age 29 – Private (2225) 1/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
William landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in October 1915 where they served as infantry. He died during the evacuation of Cape Helles bridgehead.
Born 1886 in Middlebie as William David Beattie. Son of Agnes Beattie who married David Buglass in 1890 in Edinburgh.
In 1901 William Porteous, aged 14, was a farm servant living with his aunt Robina Porteous in Eaglesfield. His mother and her husband David Buglass, a plumber, were living in Killin in Perthshire.
Killed in Action on 27 December 1915 and buried in Pink Farm Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Springkell Estate Workers memorial at the former Kirkconnel Church near Eaglesfield and on the Kirtle Church memorial in Kirtlebridge village.


ROBERT PORTEOUS.
Robert Austin Porteous – age 20 – Private (201838) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert worked on his father's farm in Terregles in Kirkcudbrightshire when he enlisted in June 1916. He was reported to be wounded and missing at Gaza.
Born 1897 in Middlebie. Son of William Porteous and of Janet Hutton (Austin) Porteous of Braecroft, Terregles.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Middlebie Parish War Memorial and on the Terregles Parish War Memorial.

ROBERT RAE.
Robert Rae – age 42 – Lance Corporal (439752) 52nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Robert was a stone-mason who had worked in Annan, Dumfriesshire before emigrating to Canada. He enlisted at Port Arthur, Ontario in September 1915 and was killed near Courcelette a year later.
Born 1874 in Middlebie. Son of the late George and Jane (Bell) Rae of Eaglesfield. Husband of Agnes Ann (Doloughan) Rae of 334 North Brodie Street, Fort William, Ontario who he married in 1901 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 16 September 1916 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial.


JAMES RILEY.
James Riley – age 20 – Private (23373) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James had served his apprenticeship as a tailor in Eaglesfield but was a chauffeur at Glenlochar House, Townhead of Greenlaw, Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire when he enlisted in April 1916.
Born 1895 at Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Martha (Farnell) Riley of Townhead of Greenlaw, Crossmichael and of Marks Farm, Kirkcudbright.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Middlebie Parish War Memorial, on the Kirtle Church memorial in Kirtlebridge village, on the Crossmichael Parish War Memorials and on the Roll of Honour in Crossmichael Parish Church.


SAMUEL C. ROGERSON.
Samuel Campbell Rogerson – age 19 – Private (6186) 1/20th Battalion, London Regiment.
Samuel was living in Burgh by Sands, Cumberland when he enlisted in Carlisle as Private (10/23939) in the Border Regiment. He was posted to the London Regiment.
Born 1897 at Millbank Cottage in Applegarth, Dumfriesshire as Samuel Campbell. Son of Catherine (Campbell) Rogerson and step-son of William Bell Rogerson of Carruther's Hill, Waterbeck, Middlebie.
Killed in Action on 24 July 1916 and buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Middlebie Parish War Memorial, on the Waterbeck Church memorial and the Lockerbie War Memorial.

JAMES SHANNON.
James Shannon – age 21 – Private (307991) 15th Battalion, Tank Corps.
James enlisted as Private (143553) in the Royal Field Artillery. He was posted as Private (26701) to the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and served with the 1st and 9th Battalions before transferring to the Tank Corps.
Born 1897 in Middlebie. Son of the late Rebecca (Carrick) Shannon and of John Shannon of Old Pennersaughs, Ecclefechan.
Rebecca died in 1901 and James was living with his uncle and aunt, Gavin and Mary Johnstone at Axletreewell Farm, Hoddom near Ecclefechan. He named Mary as his next of kin.
Died of Wounds on 28 September 1918 and buried in Sunken Road Cemetery, Boisleux-St. Marc, France.
Also named on the Middlebie Parish War Memorial.


WILLIAM J. SINCLAIR.
Possibly:
William James Sinclair – age 23 – Private (S/3549) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
William had been employed in farm work in the area, in Canonbie and at Burnfoot, Ewes, Eskdale before he enlisted in Dumfries. He joined his battalion in France May in 1915.
Born 1894 Oldwall, Brampton, Cumberland. Son of George and A. Sinclair of Harlow Hill, Stamfordham, Newcastle-on-Tyne.
Died of Wounds on 31 December 1917 and buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Middlebie Parish War Memorial.


JOHN TEASDALE.
John Teasdale – age 19 – Private (2573) 2/5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John died of pneumonia in Dumfries Royal Infirmary.
Born 1895 in Raeburnhead Cottage, Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire.
Son of Thomas and Jessie (Warrick) Teasdale, of Torbeckhill, Waterbeck, Middlebie.
Died on Service on 7 February 1915 and buried in Middlebie Cemetery.
Also named on the Middlebie Parish War Memorial.

JOHN THOMSON.
John Thomson – age 29 – Private (13880) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a gamekeeper with Sir William Younger at Auchen Castle, Moffat when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but was killed two months later at the Battle of Loos.
Born 1886 in Middlebie. Son of John and Janet (Burnet) Thomson of Birrens, Middlebie.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Middlebie Parish War Memorial and on the Kirtle Church memorial in Kirtlebridge village.


GORDON THOMSON.
Gordon Thomson – age 25 – Private (S/13933) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Gordon was a farm servant at Stonepark, Langshaw, Kirtlebridge when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915 but two months later was killed at the Battle of Loos.
Born 1890 in Carlisle. Son of Margaret Thomson (later Mrs. James Holt) of Wysebyhill Cottage, Kilrkpatrick Fleming, of “Beyond the Burn” Mouswald, Dumfriesshire and of Captainton, Irongray, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Gordon was brought up by his grandparents Robert and Elizabeth Thomson in Wysebyhill Cottages (1891) and at Stonepark (1901)
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Kirtle Church memorial in Kirtlebridge village and on the Kirkpatrick Fleming Parish Church memorial.


ROBERT C. WALLACE.
Robert Cowan Wallace – age 18 – Private (44379) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert enlisted as Private (2/2192) in the 52nd Training Battalion in August 1917. He transferred to the 4th (Reserve) of the Highland Light Infantry in December and he and his school mate, Archie Downie (see above), were posted to the Royal Scots in France on 3 April 1918. Nine days later they were both killed.
Born 1899 in Eaglesfield, Middlebie. Son of William and Mary (Cowan) Wallace of Ivy Cottage, Eaglesfield.
Killed in Action on 12 April 1918 and buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Kirtle Church memorial in Kirtlebridge village.

CHARLES WAUGH.
Charles Waugh – age 27 – Corporal (S/2660) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Charles was a clerk with the Caledonian Railway at Glenboig Lanarkshire when he enlisted in 1914. He joined his battalion in France in March 1915.
Born 1890 in Canonbie, Dumfriesshire. Son of David and Elizabeth (Johnston) Waugh of Willow Bank, Kirtlebridge.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Kirtle Church memorial in Kirtlebridge village, on the Glenboig War Memorial and on the Caledonian Railway Company memorial in Glasgow Central Station.


ANDREW G. WILSON.
Thought to be:
Andrew Graham Wilson – age 19 – Private (306120) 6th Battalion, Tank Corps.
Andrew enlisted in Greenock as Private (420581) Renfrewshire, Royal Engineers.
Born 1899 in St. Mungo, Dumfriesshire. Son of Andrew and Mary Robertson (Graham) Wilson of St. Mungo.
Killed in Action on 8 October 1918 and buried in Busigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the St. Mungo Parish War Memorial in the parish church in Kettleholm village, on the Lockerbie War Memorial and on the Kirtle Church memorial in Kirtlebridge village.
