Unveiled Saturday 2nd October 1920.
The service was conducted by the Rev. W.E. Lee in front of a large and representative gathering.
Proceedings were overseen by Mr John Mitchell, Chairman of the War Memorial Committee and among those present was Lord Provost Wotherspoon.
Ex-Bailie Beaton, on behalf of Perth Town Council, said:- "I am sure it is the wish of every person here that so long as justice and liberty are valued in our country, so long will this memorial we have unveiled today perpetuate the names of those inscribed upon it. We of this generation perhaps stand too near the great events which have taken place all over the world to see those events in their proper light or understand their proper significance. But along with the privileges and freedom we now enjoy we hold sacred the memory of those who fought and died for them. This memorial will remind future generations of the sacred heritage of the victory of justice over oppression".

PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER: 06.10.1920

JEANFIELD TRIBUTE

WAR MEMORIAL TO FALLEN HEROES UNVEILD
DRINKING FOUNTAIN ERECTED

There was a large and representative attendance at the ceremony, conducted at Jeanfield on Saturday afternoon, of unveiling the memorial which has been erected in commemoration of the men of the district who fell in the Great War.
Mr John Mitchell, chairman of the Memorial Committee, presided, and among those present were Lord Provost Wotherspoon, Mr and Mrs F. Norie Miller of Cleeve; Baillie law, Baillie MacFarlane, Rev. Walter E. Lee, St. John’s East parish Church; Rev. P. R. Landreth, St. John’s West parish Church; Councillor Thomas Hunter, J.P.; Councillor J. M. Rae, J.P.; Councillor Taylor, J.P.; Councillor Robert Stewart, Fifth ward; Councillor James Stewart; Councillor Robert Stewart, First ward; Councillor Ross; Mr J. W. Wyllie, Solicitor; ex-Baillie Beaton; Mr J. L. Hobson; Mr William Thomson; Mr H. Henderson (Secy. Of the committee); Councillor A. W. Fisher; Mr James Hutcheson; Mr John Kennedy; Mr James Whyte; Mr Jas. Campbell, and Mr Wm. Anderson.
The memorial takes the form of a handsome drinking fountain and on the panels are inscribed the names of seventy men.
After singing the Psalm, ‘The Lord’s my Shepherd’, a prayer in commemoration was offered up by the Rev. W. E. Lee.
Explaining the steps which had led to the erection of the memorial, the chairman said that at the outbreak of war practically all the eligible men from that neighbourhood joined the ranks of is Majesty’s Forces, and very soon it occurred to those who were left behind that their duty lay in sending out a few home comforts to “Oor Ain Lads” – to remind them that far away they were not forgotten by those at home. It was then that the unrivalled leader of their district, the late ex-Baillie Wright, passed from earth and cast a deep shadow over them.
As president of their committee, he organised and carried out the brilliant and successful series of gals, to obtain the necessary funds, which enabled their committee to render just a little service to the brave lads who had left their homes to fight a desperate foe in the sacred defence of their country. When the Armistice was signed their committee decided to erect a suitable war memorial, to commemorate their sorrow and pride in their glorious dead. In September last year they held their fifth annual gala which proved one of the most successful, and the entire proceeds were devoted for the purpose of erecting this memorial. After carefully considering the many proposals put forward, it being the wish of their late president, it was the unanimous opinion of their committee and the people in their district to erect a fountain as a small but fitting tribute to the immortal memory of the lads, who used to play in their recreation Grounds, and their committee hoped that the Fountain would help to brighten the happy and inspiring days of the children in the district and would remind them of the brave lads, whom that day they honoured and who honoured them, and by their supreme sacrifice honoured the country. The plans of their memorial had been most carefully prepared by their good friend, ex-Baillie Beaton, who, as their architect, had given his professional skill and his practical advice free, and they all felt most deeply indebted to him for his great kindness. The members of the committee expressed their deep sense of gratitude to the many friends who had so kindly assisted them in their efforts to erect that War memorial in memory of the brave lads of Jeanfield, who have fallen in the Great War.
The Committee expressed their sincere heartfelt sympathy with the bereaved for the lives so gallantly laid down, and to the ex-servicemen they most humbly and thankfully thanked Almighty God for their safe return home. They felt linked to them by another tie, the bond of true friendship, which he hoped would never be forgotten, and the valour of their historical fame, for so gallantly fighting, shoulder to shoulder, in the Great War. The Committee regretted and very deeply mourned the loss of several of “Oor Ain lads”, the flower of them have reached the celestial shore whence none return. They paid their tribute of sorrow and pride in their glorious dead, and their thankfulness for Almighty God for victory won and peace assured.
The hymn ‘The saints of God, their conflict past’ was then sung.
Prior to unveiling the memorial, Mr F. Norie Miller recalled the first gala held in the district for the assistance of those lads of the district who had gone forth to war, and referred to the enthusiasm and kindness of heart of the late Baillie Wright. He recalled that afternoon the great work which the Jeanfield people had, under ex-Baillie Wright, in sending comforts to these gallant lads who were out there fighting for those at home. That day they found consolation in the thought of the noble work those lads did. They recalled how gladly and readily they went away singing ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’. The road was indeed long, and it was to be still longer to many of those who were left wounded and maimed. The lads whose names were inscribed on that monument had died nobly. They had made the supreme sacrifice for those they loved and who loved them. They must not mourn as those without hope, and the best tribute they could pay to the memory of their gallant dead was to emulate the spirit of self-sacrifice. They rejoiced that they had done their duty nobly. They erected that day that memorial not because they of that generation required such a memorial, but that generations yet to come would reverence those names and endeavour to follow the noble example of those lives that had been laid down for King and country. They had done their duty, and had done it well. Those who remain must not mourn overmuch, because they knew that God sheltered them in the place appointed for His children.

During the singing of the anthem, ‘There is a land beyond the setting sun’, a large number of wreaths were laid at the base of the monument by relatives of the deceased, and included in the number was a beautiful laurel wreath kindly gifted to the Committee by Mr John Tudenham, this wreath being placed on the monument by Miss Stewart, a respected and well-known residenter in the Jeanfield district.
The lament ‘The Flowers of the Forest’ was played by Piper J. Hendry, and the ‘Last Post’ sounded by Bugler A. Moncrieff, after which the hymn, ‘Lord, while for all mankind we pray’, was sung by the assembly.
In formally handing over the Memorial to the custody of Perth Town Council, ex-Baillie Beaton said that he was sure it was the hope and wish of every person there that so long as liberty and justice were valued in this country, so long would the Memorial which they had that day unveiled perpetuate the names that were inscribed upon it. They of this generation perhaps stood to near the great events that had taken place all over the world to see those events in their proper light or understand their proper significance. Just as the privileges and freedom they now enjoyed they held sacred to the memory of their forefathers who had fought and died for them, so he believed future generations would hold as sacred that Memorial to those who in their day had died for even greater liberty and greater privileges. That Memorial would remind future generations of the sacred heritage of the victory of justice over oppression. They need have little fear that even after they who were there that day had passed over and joined their friends in the Great Beyond, that Memorial would suffer neglect, yet that it was fitting that it should be placed in the custody of some permanent body, and on behalf of the Committee and of the Jeanfield section of the community he asked the Lord Provost, in name of the council, who had generously given them the site, to still further favour them by accepting custody of the Memorial.
Lord Provost Wotherspoon said that he felt it a very great and withal a very solemn privilege to take some part on that memorable occasion. They had just unveiled that beautiful memorial to the lads of the district who, at the call of King and country, forsook all and went to battle. Alas many never returned, and it was only left for those who remained to erect such memorials as that to emphasise the services those lads had rendered to their district, to their city, and to their country. He would assure them that the members of the Town Council would do their part in seeing that the monument was preserved for future generations. Hey must not, however, confine their gratitude to such monuments. There were those that had come back maimed and broken in health, and it was their duty to see that such men were generously treated. Those gallant men must be their first charge. The Council accepted custody of that Memorial with great reverence, and would see that it was maintained in the beautiful condition in which it was received that day.
The impressive ceremony concluded with the pronouncing of the Benediction by the Rev. W. E. Lee, and the singing of the National Anthem.
The Committee are under a debt of gratitude to Mrs Cruickshanks for having so efficiently trained the special choir which led the praise.
