Unusually, these 2 memorials are on the external wall of the parish church (there are no war memorials inside). Note also that there is a WW1 memorial cross in the church grounds which is listed elsewhere.

WW1 memorial is UKNIWM 44394 and is for those who served

WW2 memorial is UKNIWM 44395

Colvend parish church is at OS Map Ref: NX 862 542

The first picture shows the parish church and you can make out the two memorials on the wall.

LIEUT. STANLEY ATKINSON, R.A.
Stanley Atkinson, Lieutenant (295786) Royal Artillery. (?) Age 37.
Born 1907 in Lancashire. Son of Edward Ellery Atkinson and Mary Jane Edmondson Atkinson; husband of Marjorie Povey Atkinson of Rockcliffe, Colvend. Lieutenant, Pioneer Corps with The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey)
Died 24 December 1944, buried in Yabe Cemetery, Lagos, Nigeria.

FLT. SGT. JOHN H. BARR, B.Sc. R.A.F.V.R.
John Hamilton Barr, Flight Sergeant (1366045) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 32.
Born 1911 at Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. Husband of Anne McDiarmid Barr Of Kirkbean. Son-in-Law of Alford and Jane Anderson of Craigbittern, Sandyhills, Colvend.
Missing in Action 29 Srptember 1943 whilst on anti-submarine patrol in the Western Approaches/Bay of Biscay on a Wellington of 172 Squadron RAF Coastal Command, remembered on the Runnymede Memorial, Windsor and on the Dalbeattie War Memorial.

FLT. SGT. ALLAN K. EDGAR, R.A.F.V.R.
Allan Knowles Edgar, Flight Sergeant (1380422) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 22.
Born 1921 at West Derby, Lancashire. Son of Thomas Edgar, formerly of Kippford, and Elsie Knowles Edgar. Returned from Argentia to enlist.
Killed in Action 17 April 1943 whilst a wireless operator/air gunner on an Halifax of 77 Squadron, RAF Bomber Command during a raid on the Skoda works in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, buried in Durnbach War Cemetery, Bad Tolz, Germany and also remembered on the Memorial to the Fallen in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Buenos Aires.

There are 2 Sergeant John Hewitsons listed by CWGC both RAFVR but neither have an established connection with Colvend.

Gordon John McFadyean, Flight Sergeant (1385941) Royal air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 21.
Born 1923 at Lambeth, London. Son of Kenneth and Elsie McFadyean of Rockcliffe, Colvend.
Missing in Action 23 October 1943 whilst on anti-submarine patrol in the Mediterranean on a Hudson of 48 Squadron, RAF Coastal Command, remembered on the Malta Memorial, Valletta, Malta.

SUB. LT. RICHARD J. McHAFFIE, R.N.V.R.
Richard James McHaffie, Sub Lieutenant (A) Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. Age 21.
Born 1923 at Hackney, London. Son of Arnold and Agnes Jane McHaffie of Wood Green, Middlesex who married at Midtown, Colvend.
Died 10 October 1944 in an air accident with 1843 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm at HMS Gannett, Northern Ireland, buried in Colvend Parish Churchyard. (CWG)

FLY. OFF. ALASTAIR N. L. McQUEEN, R.A.F.V.R.
Alastair Norman Leigh McQueen, Flight Lieutenant (Pilot) (1129934) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 31.
Born 1914 at Corsock Bridge, Kirkcudbrightshire. Resident of Sandyhills, Colvend.
Killed in Action 9 February 1945 whilst a second pilot (although not on the crew list) on a Lancaster of 15 Squadron, RAF Bomber Command. The plane crashed in woods near the village of Wauthier-Braine, south-west of Brussels after a raid on Hohenbudberg railway yards in the Rhur, buried in Brussels Town Cemetery, Belgium.

FLT. LT. ANGUS J. M. MILNE, D.F.C. R.A.F.V.R.
Angus John Mathewson Milne, Distinguished Flying Cross, Flight Lieutenant (Pilot) (138662) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 21.
Born 1922 at Penang, Straits Settlement. Son of John Mathewson Milne and Joan Anderson Milne of Richmond, Surrey and of Sandyhills, Colvend.
Killed in Action 14 September 1943 whilst the pilot of a Halifax bomber of 138 (Special Duties) Squadron, RAF which crashed killing all of the crew and three SOE Polish Liberation Army agents, buried in Esbjerg (Fourfelt) Cemetery, Denmark.

COL. SGT. ALEXANDER S. SYME, K.O.S.B.
Alexander Stark Syme, Colour Sergeant (3190521) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 40.
Born 1902 at John St. Dalbeattie. Son of James and Grace Syme; husband of Christina Smith Syme of Cairngill Cottage, Colvend.
Died 4 February 1943 from a rifle bullet wound on Scalloway Road, Lerwick, Shetland, buried at Dalbeattie Cemetery. (CWG)

Joseph Watret, Sergeant (409160) 17th/21st lancers (Royal Armoured Corps). Age 27.
Born 1915 at Borgue, Kirkcudbrighshire. Son of Joseph and Lilian Watret of Covend.
Missing in Action 13 January 1943, remembered on the Medjez-el-Bab Memorial, Tunisia.

LIEUT. DAVID W. LEGGATT, R.N.
David William Leggatt, Lieutenant, H.M. Submarine Usk, Royal Navy.
(No family information)
Acting Sub Liutenant with a seniority date of 1 May 1937. Attended submarine training at HMS Dolphin (Submarine Depot, Gosport) April to December 1938. Joined HM Submarine Regent and then transferred to HM Submarine Usk in March 1941. (Royal Navy Submarine Museum)
Lost at sea late April/early May 1941 - The Usk sailed from Malta on 19 April 1941 to patrol off the north-west coast of Sicily but, on 25 April, signalled that due to intense anti-submarine activity was moving to the Cape Bon area off the coast of Tunisia. She was never heard from again.
Remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

This is clearly a civic memorial rather than a church one so I have renamed the thread and moved it to the Civic section.

I have been investigating this with help from Ken Morrison and believe that the WW2 plaque is a civic memorial whereas the WW1 plaque should be regarded as a church memorial even though it is on the outside of the church as there is a WW1 civic memorial nearby with the same names. So I thought that I should split the thread and move the WW1 plaque back to the church section, what do you think?

I think David suspects the names on the Great War memorial are those who served and the ones on the cross are those who died. I'd hold on splitting this just now until e work out what's what.

Correct, the Great War plaque is a Roll of Honour (noted in my first post).

Exactly what I was going to say - it's a civic roll of honour. There doesn't appear (from the quick check I made) to be any duplication of the names between the two WW1 memorials.

There is only one apparent duplication that I have spotted - William Grieve - but I don't think it is the same person. Two brothers are on the WW1 (Cross) memorial James and William Grieve but only the first was born in Rockcliffe, Colvend (William was born in Croyden).
Even in those days Rockcliffe was made up of holiday/second homes.
I'm sure that the memorial on the church wall is a "Served and Survived"
