And presumably on the West UF Church memorial. The West Kirk became St Margaret's in 1929 and still survives as a congegation.

See here for a shot of the memorial in situ. Unfortunately the names are unreadable.

Renovations complete, just some landscaping work to be done now.

Courier article

Restored Balmashanner war memorial casts off its scaffolding

Forfar's historic Balmashanner war memorial has emerged from its winter scaffolding cloak following a £140,000 restoration project.
balmashanner monument

The C-listed monument has undergone the repairs after engineers found the condition of the sandstone monument to be poorer than originally thought.

The scheme has seen galvanised metal straps put in place to tie the bartizan tower to the main structure, built to a design by TR Soutar between 1920 and 1921 as Forfar's memorial to the fallen of the First World War.

''The main stabilisation and repointing works are now complete on site and the scaffolding has been taken down,'' an Angus Council spokesman said.

''This will allow the hard landscaping works to proceed at the base of the tower which will give Balmashanner monument a much improved setting and make access easier to this listed monument.

''All the works are anticipated to be finished in May with an overall cost of approximately £140,000 from Forfar Common Good.

''This restoration project has been carried out by a local builder and supervised by council officers to a high standard which will safeguard the monument for generations to come.''

It's unclear why the month of death is wrong in the RoH, and the month the death was reported to his relatives is used?

(Glasgow Herald 4th March 1915)
"Private John Luke of the 2nd Scots Guards, a native of Forfar, has been reported to his relatives as having been killed in action on November 17. Private Luke was a member of the Edinburgh City Police when he enlisted immediately before the outbreak of war. He had only been seven days at the front when he was killed. He was 19 years of age."

The First World War board from the memorial is now on public display in The Meffan Institute in Forfar, which is the town's museum & art gallery. I'll try to get pics on my next visit.

For conspicuous gallantry on 22nd October, 1914, when he conveyed a wounded man in a barrow across the fields to an ambulance, whilst exposed to heavy machine gun and rifle fire, and then returned to his section still under fire. Was previously brought to notice for his gallant conduct.

It appears he was not killed during the war and died in Dundee in 1931...

Hi All
I am researching the men/boys from my church in Stirling who fell in the Great War. One of them, John Beattie Stewart was born in Forfar in 1876. I stumbled across this site through the power of Google and found him on the Forfar Roll of Honour as transcribed above. There are also the names David, Donald, George and William Stewart; John had brothers with these names. I've discovered Donald was his youngest brother but none of the online resources I've checked can confirm/deny any connections with the other names. Would the book referred to, (Forfar and district in the Great War) mention anything about siblings serving or being casualties? Or would Angus Archives have local newspapers that would give that info?

Yes, Ken.
That is "my" John Stewart. He was killed at the Battle of Loos along with two other men from the church.

Columba - I've sent you a PM with a bit of detail but just to add here;
William A Stewart married Clementina Beattie in 1868 in Forfar. You would need to check birth details but it looks like John Beattie Stewart was their son.
If that's so then Donald Stewart was a brother.
