WILLIAM J. THOMSON, SERGt. K.O.S.B.
William John Thomson – age 26 – Sergeant (2083) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Educated at Laurieknowe School, Maxwelltown, William was employed by Maxwell & Son, Publishers, in Dumfries. He had served pre-war for 9 years with the Galloway Rifles and Territorials and was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion on 4 June 1915 at Gallipoli.
Born 1889 in Dumfries. Son of Robert and Frances Ann (Carruthers) Thomson of Lewis Place, Ryedale, Maxwelltown.
Missing in Action on 21 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial.

FRANK THOMSON, L/CPL. K.O.S.B.
Frank Thomson – age 20 – Lance Corporal (1087) “B” Company, 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Educated at Laurieknowe School, Maxwelltown, Frank was a coach painter at Sloan and Sons, Whitesands, Dumfries. He enlisted in August 1914 and landed with his battalion in June 1915 at Gallipoli. He died from wounds sustained in there.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of Robert and Frances Ann (Carruthers) Thomson of Lewis Place, Ryedale, Maxwelltown.
Died of Wounds on 23 January 1916 and buried in Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta.
Also named on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial.


DAVID TWEEDIE, PTE. K.O.S.B.
David Tweedie – age 19 – Private (241003) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David had originally enlisted in the 2/5th KOSB in January 1915 when he was just over 15 years old. He went to France at the beginning of April 1918 and was officially reported missing later that month. However he sent a letter to his mother in June and the report was cancelled. Sadly he died later that year.
Born 1899 in Castle Douglas, Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire.
[Born as James Davidson – Boarder/Adopted Son with the Tweedie family on 1901 & 1911 census]
Son of Nellie Davidson of Leswalt, Wigtownshire. Foster son of David and Annie Tweedie of Thistle Lodge, Greenbrae, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 30 September 1918 and buried in Dadizeele New British Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


RICHARD DOUGLAS, PTE. K.O.S.B.
Richard Addison Gillespie Murray Douglas – age 18 – Private (42399) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Formerly Private (46305) 2nd Highland Light Infantry.
Richard was employed in the locomotive department of the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company when he was called up in January 1918.
Born 1900 in Dumfries. Son of James and Agnes (McKinnel) Douglas of 63 Loreburn Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 31 October 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the G&SW Railway Memorial now in Ayr Station.

1939 - 1945

JOHN BARBOUR
.
John Barbour – age 29 – Gunner (14364912) 71 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Born 1915 in Dumfries.
Son of John and Mary Jane Barbour.
Husband of Agnes Haening Barbour of Glasgow who he married in 1941 in Glasgow.
Killed in Action on 19 February 1944 and buried in Minturno War Cemetery, Italy.


ERIC BROWN.
Eric Brown – age 20 – Sergeant, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner (638323) No.2 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit, Coastal Command, Royal Air Force.
Eric was a member of the crew of three of a Blenheim on a night cross country navigation flight from RAF Catfoss in Yorkshire when the aircraft flew into Burbage Moor near Ringinglow in the Peak District.
Born 1921 in Dumfries. Son of John and Mary Carnochan (Reid) Brown of Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 26 January 1941 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


ALEXANDER STUART CAMERON.
Alexander Stewart Cameron – age 33 – Private (2817099) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Alexander had been a postman in Dumfries.
Born 1910 in Newington, Edinburgh. Son of Robert and Margaret Cameron.
Died on Active Service on 6 June 1942 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the Post Office Memorial in Dumfries as Alexander Stuart Cameron


WILLIAM G. CORMACK.
William George Cormack – age 21 – Sergeant, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner (985764)
101 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
William's Wellington bomber took-off from RAF Bourne, Cambridgshire for a raid on Bremen but crashed near the target.
Born 1920 in Dumfries. Son of John Craig Cormack and Mary (Roberts) Cormack of Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 4 June 1942 and buried in Becklingen War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


WILLIAM JOHN DOUGLAS.
William John Douglas – age 21 – Sergeant (1343507) 619 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
The Squadron was formed at Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire in April 1943 flying Lancaster bombers. William's aircraft crashed during an air-test.
Born 1921 in Dumfries. Son of Alan S. and Ellen H. Douglas, of Dumfries. Husband of Jean or Jane Auld (Campbell) Douglas of Dumfries who he married in 1942 in Dumfries.
Killed on Active Service on 9 June 1943 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.

HUGH MAXWELL.
Hugh Maxwell – age 29 – Gunner (1093750) 945 Battery, 10 Defence Regiment. Royal Artillery.
Hugh was accidentally killed at Corston near Malmesbury. His death was registered at Chippenham in Wiltshire.
Born 1911 in Holywood, Dumfriesshire.
Son of Robert and Jessie Maxwell.
Husband of Abigail Coutts Dickson (Sproat) Maxwell, of Wallacetown Cottages Brownrigg, Loaning, Gasstown, Dumfries who he married in 1933 in Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 11 April 1941 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.


ANDREW NICOL.
Andrew Isaac John Nicol – age 21 – Sergeant, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner (543932)
144 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
Andrew's Hampden bomber took off from RAF Hemswell, Lincolnshire for a raid on Keil but crashed in the target area.
Born 1919 in Dumfries. Son of Andrew and Annie (Bowness) Nicol of Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 4 July 1940 and buried in Keil War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


LOUDEN RICHARDSON.
Louden Richardson – age 52 – Boatswain: S.S. Autolycus (Liverpool) Merchant Navy.
The “Autolycus” and other ships in a convoy off the east coast of India were sunk by gunfire from ships of the Japanese Navy.
Born 1889 in Dumfries. Son of Captain John Richardson and of Janet (Louden) Richardson.
Husband of Agnes (Clark) Richardson of Greenbrae Loaning, Dumfries who he married in 1919 in Dumfries.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 6 April 1942 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


THOMAS H. REID.
Thomas Harper Reid – age 26 – Private (3192882) No.3 Platoon, “A” Company, 7th (Galloway) Airborne Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
During a training exercise, a Stirling bomber towing a Horsa Glider carrying No.3 Platoon of “A” Company, 7th KOSB, hit a tree on high ground and crashed, killing all aboard.
Born 1917 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Son of John Caig Reid and Agnes (Adrain) Reid, of Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 4 April 1944 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.

ALBERT SETTI.
Albert Setti – age 21 – Driver (T/10704007) 284 Company (Divisional Troops), Royal Army Service Corps.
Albert had landed at Normandy on 9 June 1944. The Hospital Ship “Amsterdam” was sunk by a mine on 7 August while taking casualties from Juno Beach.
Born 1922 in Dumfries – as Alberto Orlando Setti. Son of Henry and Isabella (Stewart) Setti of Dumfries.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 7 August 1944 and named on the Brookwood Memorial, Surrey.
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.


ALEXANDER S. WATSON.
Alexander Samuel Watson – age 19 – Private (14403865) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
2nd KOSB sailed with the 7th (Indian) Division to Burma in September 1943. They crossed into the coastal province of Burma and in December 1943 the division advanced down the Kalapanzin River valley.
Born 1924 in Dumfries. Son of Thomas Watson, and of Agnes Watson, of Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 20 January 1944 and named on the Rangoon Memorial, Maynmar (Burma)
Also named on the Dumfries War Memorial.
