Wigtownshire Free Press (27/1/1916): Information has reached Girvan that Private Thomas McNeill, 9th New South Wales Regiment, Australian Expeditionary Force, was killed in action at the Dardanelles. Pte McNeill was brought up by Mrs Corton, Wreck Road, Girvan. For a year or two he served with Baillie Harvey as an apprentice draper and afterwards went to Carlisle, where he worked for some time. From Carlisle he emigrated to Australia. Shortly after war broke out he joined the Australian contingent and was not long at the front when he met his death.

BIRNIE ROBERT.

Robert Birnie – age 35 – Pioneer (146507) 4th Battalion, Special Brigade, Royal Engineers.
Robert was educated at Mount Pleasant school in Gretna, Dumfriesshire and at Girvan in Ayrshire before studying Arts and Science at Edinburgh University from 1906 to 1915. He was awarded his M.A. in 1911 and B.Sc, in 1915. He described himself as an agricultural expert and was living at 94 Bruntsfield Place in Edinburgh when he enlisted in January 1916. He was posted as a chemist to the R.E. at Chatham in Kent in February and joined the 4th Battalion in France in March. Robert died of gas poisoning.
Born 1881 in Gretna, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late George James Birnie and of Williamina (Weall) Birnie of Redkirk Mill, Gretna.
Died on Active Service on 28 June 1916 and buried in Fosse No.10 Communal Cemetery Extension, Sains-en-Gohelle, France.
Also named on the Gretna Old Parish Church memorial and Roll of Honour, on the Gretna War Memorial and on the Edinburgh University Roll of the Fallen.
