Inverkeilor - Angus District (Arbroath Landward)

The Inverkeilor war memorial is a grey granite column set on an octagonal pedestal and surmounted by a cross. The pedestal stands on an octagonal step which rests on a square base. The commemoration and names of the WWI dead are set in lead lettering on the faces of the pedestal.
The monument stands in the kirkyard in front of the kirk.

Jim

I reckoned the unusual order of names meant that they are listed in order of death. If we start with W Ritchie Black Watch and assume he died in 1914 we find this man in CWGC and SNWM databases:

Surname RITCHIE
Firstname William
Service Number 2281
Date Death 15/10/1914
Decoration
Place of birth Brechin Forfarshire
Other 1st Bn.
SNWM roll THE BLACK WATCH (ROYAL HIGHLANDERS)
Rank L/Cpl
Theatre of death F.& F.

Name: RITCHIE
Initials: W
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lance Corporal
Regiment/Service: Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Unit Text: 1st Bn.
Date of Death: 15/10/1914
Service No: 2281
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: D. 2.
Cemetery: VILLERS-EN-PRAYERES COMMUNAL CEMETERY

the next name D Stephen gives us

Surname STEPHEN
Firstname David
Service Number 1933
Date Death 02/11/1914
Decoration
Place of birth Arbroath
Other 1st Bn.
SNWM roll THE BLACK WATCH (ROYAL HIGHLANDERS)
Rank L/Cpl
Theatre of death Home.

Name: STEPHEN, DAVID MOIR
Initials: D M

Unit Text: "A" Coy. 1st Bn.
Age: 22
Date of Death: 02/11/1914

Additional information: Son of George and Jessie M. Stephen, of 55, Dishland St., Arbroath, Forfarshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: S. 1. 95.
Cemetery: COLCHESTER CEMETERY

By that reasoning Scots Guard Gibb would likely be a casualty in 1915. However looking up the databases he died in 1918

Surname GIBB
Firstname Norman
Service Number 16947
Date Death 12/07/1918
Decoration
Place of birth Arbroath
Other
SNWM roll SCOTS GUARDS
Rank Gdsn
Theatre of death F.& F.

Name: GIBB, NORMAN ALEXANDER
Initials: N A
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Scots Guards
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Age: 23
Date of Death: 12/07/1918
Service No: 16947
Additional information: Son of John Grant Gibb and Ann Gibb, of Station House, Inverkeilor, Montrose.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: III. C. 4.
Cemetery: BERLES NEW MILITARY CEMETERY

That means I have no idea in what order they are listed but we do know it is Pte N Gibb on the memorial.

Gunner D Taylor could be SA Artillery?

Name: TAYLOR
Initials: D
Nationality: South African
Rank: Gunner
Regiment/Service: South African Heavy Artillery
Unit Text: 73rd Siege Bty.
Date of Death: 11/04/1918

(Dundee Courier 31st March 1919)

The Parish Councillors of Inverkeilor, on a representation made to them, have taken up the matter of the erection of a suitable memorial to those belonging to the parish who have fallen in the war.

At a meeting held in Arbroath on Saturday - Mr D.C.F. Rutherford Lindsay Carnegie of Kinblethmont presiding - they discussed the form which the memorial should take, and ultimately decided that an effort should be made to raise the sum of £400 for the purpose of placing an obelisk in a prominent part of the village of Inverkeilor. The representatives of the West, Middle and East Wards were appointed collectors of subscriptions in their respective districts, and Mr Allexander Inglis, inspector of poor, secretary and treasurer.

Interesting that at their first meeting an obelisk was suggested but a mercat cross design was chosen in the end.
