However it is believed that in the late 1800's, a German called Gustaf Vogel arrived in town, and set up his business in Kirk Wynd as a sausage skin manufacturer.

We do know from the minute books that he took his three degrees during 1902 and 1903, and went on to become an office bearer in the lodge for a brief time soon after. Whilst we believe that he was the supplier of the Ram's head, there is no further trace of this in the minute books. Gustaf also worked in the local slaughterhouse, and he met an untimely death by contracting anthrax when being cut by a knife.

Real story is that the council are doing essential repairs to stonework and it will be unveiled soon. They have managed to trace the daughter of the lady who modelled for it.

According to SDGW, these 2 brothers were born in Cupar but neither appear though both names are listed on the Hawick Roll of Honour:

OSBORNE.- Killed in action on the 6th inst., Major G.E.B. Osborne, Yeomanry, of the firm Pagan & Osborne, writers, Cupar."

Same publication, day, date "CASUALTIES Notes on Officers YEOMANRY Major GEORGE EDWARD BELL OSBORNE.- Killed. Major Osborne was the only son of Mr Robert Osborne, ???, of Thornton Hall, near Glasgow and Mrs Osborne, The Hermitage, Cupar. Educated at Glasgow Academy and University. Graduating M.A. and L.L.B., he studied for the law and in 1904 he joined the legal firm of Messrs. Pagan and Osborne, Cupar. In March, 1913, he was appointed joint agent of the British Linen Company's branch bank at Cupar. Before coming to Cupar he held a commission in the 1st Lanark Volunteers. At the outbreak of war he was a captain in the Yeomanry and served in Gallipoli and Egypt. He was secretary of the Cupar Tennis and Hockey Clubs and joint secretary of the Cupar Conservative Club."

Although not listed on the Cupar War Memorial, James Houston Black was born in the Parish of Cupar in 1875 to parents Peter Black and Jane Black ms Houston.
James left Cupar with his mother and father between 1875 and 1879 and relocated to Alloa where all his siblings were born.
James left for South Africa in 1896 and enlisted to serve during WW1 as Private 21950, 2nd Regiment(Inf), South African Infantry and served until his death on 11 April 1918 at Flanders, Belgium.
Commemorated on Panel 15-16 and 16a on Menin Gate Memorial.
