Most of the Great War Seaforths will be from the 1/6th Bn like the Victoria Cross man listed. Sgt Alexander Edwards VC. Here is his CWGC entry with citation:
Name: EDWARDS, ALEXANDER
Initials: A
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Serjeant
Regiment/Service: Seaforth Highlanders
Unit Text: 6th Bn.
Age: 32
Date of Death: 24/03/1918
Service No: 265473
Awards: VC
Additional information: Son of A. Edwards, of Stotfield, Lossiemouth. Born at Drainie, Morayshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Bay 8.
Memorial: ARRAS MEMORIAL
Citation: An extract from "The London Gazette," dated 14th Sept., 1917, records the following:-For most conspicuous bravery in attack, when, having located a hostile machine gun in a wood, he, with great dash and courage, led some men against it, killed all the team and captured the gun. Later, when a sniper was causing casualties, he crawled out to stalk him, and although badly wounded in the arm, went on and killed him. One officer only was now left with the company, and, realising that the success of the operation depended on the capture of the furthest objective, Serjt. Edwards, regardless of his wound, led his men on till this objective was captured. He subsequently showed great skill in consolidating his position, and very great daring in personal reconnaissance. Although again twice wounded on the following day, this very gallant N.C.O. maintained throughout a complete disregard for personal safety, and his high example of coolness and determination engendered a fine fighting spirit in his men.
Note he was killed in the German Spring Offensive of late March 1918 when the 51st Div took a lot of casualties. Many of them are listed on the Arras Memorial.

Date of Death: 18/10/1915

RESIDENCE - BLAIRGOWRIE
Blairgowrie Advertiser 20th November 1915
Corporal James Forsyth, 6th K.O.S.B. was killed in action 18th October. He was the eldest son of Mr. Forsyth, 43, Clifton Road, Lossiemouth, and was about 21 years of age. For some years he was with his late father as a hairdresser, and before answering the call about a year ago he was in the employment of Mr A. Steven, Allan Street, Blairgowrie.
A comrade writing to deceased's mother, says - "James was killed by a shell while in the trenches, and died a hero's death, death being instantaneous. In him the Battalion lost one of its most promising N.C.O's., and one who was greatly respected by all who knew him. He was promoted Corporal after the great charge on 25th September".

If asked, I will happily post on the forum (or email individuals) that part of the Memorial that contains the details of a specific individual. Furthermore, I would also be prepared to email higher resolution photographs of this War Memorial.

Just a quick comment on the Memorial. It is in itself very fine but the setting doesn't appear to be the nicest and is not helped by the surrounding wire mesh.
Blairgowrie Advertiser: 17:08:1918
Many in the district will regret to learn of the death in action on July 23rd of Captain Robert Kemp Wellwood, M.C., Seaforths, youngest son of Rev. John Wellwood, Drainie, Lossiemouth, a close friend of the late Rev. Robert Kemp, Blairgowrie, and who frequently occupied his pulpit. This is the second son of the family who has made the great sacrifice for King and country, while a third was discharged some time ago owing to severe wounds. Captain Wellwood, who was 24 years of age, was in Canada before the war, but patriotically came home to enlist, going on active service about the end of 1916. On November 22nd, 1917, he was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was passionately loved by his men, and highly respected, and was very often commended by his Brother officers and those in command. Of Mr Wellwood's four sons, the only none now remaining on service is at present on duty somewhere in the East on board one of Her Majesty's ships.

Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Captain

Age: 24
Date of Death: 23/07/1918

Additional information: Son of Mrs. Wellwood, and the late Rev. John Wellwood, of Lossiemouth.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: B. 7.
Cemetery: ST. IMOGES CHURCHYARD
Name: WELLWOOD
Initials: J H
Nationality: Canadian
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment)
Unit Text: 43rd Bn.
Age: 24
Date of Death: 10/06/1916
Service No: 153095
Additional information: Son of Mrs. Wellwood and the late Rev. John Wellwood, of Lossiemouth, Morayshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Sp. Mem. H. 1.
Cemetery: MAPLE COPSE CEMETERY

What became of the third and fourth brothers is not known to me. The one seriously wounded does not appear on the memorial so he, in theory, survived at least until after its erection. As can be seen by the CWGC entry their father, Rev. John Wellwood, was also deceased by the time of entry. |

I think this site is opposite the entrance to the old railway station. The line to Elgin closed in the 1960s and the station is now a car park. It's not the best place for such a fine memorial today but at the time it would have been in a prominent place for any visitors to the town.
Regards
