Crosshouse - Kilmarnock & Louden District

The Crosshouse war memorial is a tall grey granite celtic cross with wheel-head and bosses standing on a tapering pedestal and two low steps. The commemorations are at the base of the cross shaft on both sides and the names of the WWI dead are listed in lead lettering on the face and sides of the pedestal. The names of the WWII dead have been added in lead lettering at the rear face of the pedestal.
The monument stands in front of the kirk on a raised bank of grass in the village.

Below - the rear face of the pedestal with the WWII names. The side lists more WWI names:

At a public meeting on 29th April 1920 it was unanimously agreed, after discussion, to request permission from the trustees of the church to erect a Celtic cross in the church grounds. Permission was granted. A handsome War Memorial was solemnly dedicated on Sunday 2nd October 1921. A replica of the St Matins Cross, Iona, the Memorial is of Peterhead granite, about fifteen feet high and occupies a fine site on the terrace at the front of the church.

The Inscription reads:

“To the glory of God and in affectionate remembrance of the men of Crosshouse Parish who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1919”

Round the base are engraved the names of fifty-two men and underneath is the sentence:

“They loved not their life even unto death”

This memorial enjoys Historic Scotland listing protection as it is specifically mentioned in the listing of the church as grade C(S) which was made on 20th April 2005.
