1939 - 1945


BDR. JAMES BARKER.
James Barker, Bombardier (1484889) 104 Battery, 19th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. Age 42.
Born 1897 in Langshaw, Roxburghshire. Son of Alexander Wilson Barker and of Agnes (Henry) Barker. Husband of Agnes (Barrie) Barker of 20 Ghyll Crescent, Newton Stewart who he married in 1928 in Stranraer, Wigtownshire.
Died on active service 10 June 1940 during an operation at the No.23 (Scottish) General Hospital in Peebles, Peeblesshire and buried in Peebles Cemetery. (CWG)


PTE. KEITH J. BREWER.
Keith John Brewer, Private (3197649) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 23.
Born 1921 in St. Neots, Bedfordshire. Son of Wllliam and Clara Louisa (Cullip) Brewer. Husband of Helen Carson (Dodds) Brewer of 11 Garlies Crescent, Newton Stewart who he married in 1942 in Penninghame.
Killed in action 19 July 1944 and buried in Banneville-La-Campagne War Cemetery, Calvados, France. Also listed (with his brother William) on the Eaton Socon Parish War Memorial, Bedfordshire.


PTE. GEORGE CONNELL.
George Henry Connell, Private (2936065) 6th Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. Age 58.
Born c.1882 in Yorkshire. Son of George and Mary Ann (Beman) Connell. Husband of Elizabeth (Thomson m.s. O'Neill) Connell of 9 Garlies Crescent, Newton Stewart who he married in 1918 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.
Died on active service 30 November 1940 in an accident at Invergarry, Inverness-shire and buried in Newton Stewart Cemetery. (CWG)

Gilbert James Albert Dewar, Lance Corporal (2765801) 5th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) Age 21.
Born 1922 in Fetteresso, Kincardineshire. Son of Glibert and Rose (Whitehurst) Dewar of Polbae, Newton Stewart. (Kirkcowan/Penninghame)
Killed in action 11 June 1944. and buried in Hermanville War Cemetery, Calvados, France. Also listed on the Kirkcowan Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JAMES B. DIAMOND.
James Barrie Diamond, Lance Corporal (3184752) 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, Army Air Corps. Age 34.
Born 1908 in Creebridge, Minnigaff, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Maggie Diamond.
Missing in action 30 November 1942 and listed on the Medjez-el-Bab Memorial, Tunisia. Also listed on the Minnigaff Parish War Memorial.


F/O. DOUGLAS M. DREW.
Douglas McMillan Drew, B.A. (Oxon) Flying Officer/Navigator (145376) 115 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 35.
Born 1909 in Penninghame. Son of James Lawson Drew and of Mary Walker (MacMillan) Drew of Newton Stewart.
Killed in action 23 April 1944 and buried in Reichswald War Cemetery, Germany. Also listed on the Minnigaff Parish War Memorial.
Dougals's Lancaster was shot down near Dusseldorf.

ENGR. CHARLES DRYSDALE.
Charles Drysdale, Third Engineering Officer: SS Cape Nelson (Glasgow) Merchant Navy. Age 39.
Born 1901 in Whithorn, Wigtownshire. Son of Charles and Elizabeth (Stewart) Drysdale of Newton Stewart. Husband of Helen McCubbin (McGhie) Drysdale of Glasgow who he married in 1931 in Mochrum Parish, Wigtownshire.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at sea 23 February 1941 and listed on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
The "Cape Nelson" was sunk by U-95 south west of Iceland. The Captain and three crew were lost.


CPL. JAMES HALLIDAY.
James Halliday, Corporal (3185193) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 31.
Born 1908 in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Robert and Agnes (Gelston) Halliday. Husband of Janet Robina Scott (Barr) Halliday of Newton Stewart who he married in 1936 in Penninghame.
Missing in action 31 May 1940 and listed on the Dunkirk Memorial, France.


PTE. HARRY C. HANNAY.
Harry Campbell Hannay, Private (4783) 3rd Battalion (Penang and Province, Wellesley Volunteer Corps) Straits Settlement Volunteer Force. Age 27.
Born 1916 in London. Son of Harry Hannay of Prospect House, Newton Stewart and of Katherine Louise (Taylor) Hannay - both of Ipoh, Perak, Malaya.
Died as a Prisoner of War 5 July 1943 and buried in Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, Thailand.
Harry and his brother Edward were PoW's. His father, Harry, and mother, Katherine were interned in Changi Prison in Singapore where Katherine died on 11 April 1942.

PTE. SAMUEL HERD.
Samuel Hugh Herd, Private (3188099) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 29.
Born 1912 in Belfast, Ireland. Son of Robert and Ellen (Morrison) Herd. Husband of Margaret (Lambert) Herd of Garlies Crescent, Newton Stewart who he married in 1935 in Penninghame.
Died on active service 22 March 1942 and buried in Heliopolis War Cemetery, Cairo, Egypt.


PTE. RICHARD McCANDLISH.
Richard McCandlish, Private (13085811) 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment) Age 32.
Born 1910 in Upper Barr, Penninghame. Son of Robert and Agnes (Middleton) McCandlish. Husband of Mary Jane (Malcolmson) McCandlish of Beeswing Village, New Abbey Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire who he married in 1935 in Beeswing when he was a ploughman at Blawquhairn Farm, Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died as a Prisoner of War 17 March 1943 and buried in Anacona War Cemetery, Italy.
Richard was originally buried in the Macerata Civic Cemetery in central Italy near the Adriatic coast. The town is just north of the site of the PoW Campo Concentremento 53 at Sforzacosta. He was re-interred in the Anacona War Cemetery on 19 January 1945.


PTE. ALEX. M. McCLYMONT.
Alexander McG. McClymont, Private (7373397) Royal Army Medical Corps. Age 25.
Born 1919 in Kirkinner, Wigtownshire. Son of Alexander and Jane or Jean (Blair) McClymont of Mochrum Park Lodge, Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire.
Killed in action 10 September 1944 and buried in Gradara War Cemetery, Italy.

SGT. ROBERT MacGOWAN.
Robert MacGowan, Sergeant/Flight Engineer (1823400) 50 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 19.
Born 1925 in Creetown, Kirkmabreck Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Sonof William and Catherine Vernon (Brown) MacGowan of 24 King Street, Newton Stewart. Educated at the Douglas Ewart High School in Newton Stewart.
Killed in action 3 February 1945 and buried in Choloy War Cemetery, France.
Robert's Lancaster crashed near Strasbourg. One of the air gunners survived. The others were buried in the American Cemetery at Epinal but were re-interred at Choloy after the war.


ORD. SIGL. JOHN McINTYRE.
John McIntyre, Ordinary Signalman (P/SSX 31673) HMS Camito, Royal Navy. Age 19.
Born 1922 in Sorbie, Wigtownshire. Son of John and Helen (Cuthbertson) McIntyre of Newton Stewart.
Killed in action/Lost at sea 6 May 1941 and listed on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
The "Camito" was an Ocean Boarding Vessel (a converted merchantship) and was escorting a captured Italian tanker when both were sunk by U-97.


SGT. ROBERT A. McKEAND.
Robert Allison McKeand, Sergeant/Air Gunner (1823066) 115 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 20.
Born 1924 in Penninghame. Son of Alexander and Sarah Hannah (Allison) McKeand of Sawmill Cottage, Penninghame.
Killed in action 9 August 1944 and buried in Grand-Rullecourt Communal Cemetery, Arras, France.
Robert's Lancaster was tasked to attack a fuel-dump in the Foret de Luceaux. The aircraft crashed near Grand-Rullecourt. Three of the crew were killed and are buried together in the village cemetery.

DVR. HUGH D. PARKER.
Hugh David Parker, Driver (1893393) Royal Engineers. Age 35.
Born 1910 in Penninghame. Son of Hugh and Jessie Black (Marshall) Parker. Husband of Annie Young (Cringles) Parker of Carsluith, Kirkmabreck Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire who he married in 1929 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire.
Died 5 October 1945 of Tuberculosis at his home in Carsluith and buried in Challoch (All Saints) Episcopalian Churchyard (CWG)


SGT. JOHN R. RONNIE.
John Robert Ronnie, Sergeant/Wireless Operator/Air Gunner (976171) 83 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force. Age 23.
Born 1918 in Penninghmae. Son of John McCreadie Ronnie and of Jane (Kelly) Ronnie. Educated at the Douglas Ewart High School in Newton Stewart.
Killed in action 21 April 1941 and buried in Houthulst Churchyard, Belgium.
John's Hampden bomber was en-route to Cologne when it crashed in Houthulst. The crew of four are buried together in the village churchyard.


CPL. RUSSELL SMITH.
All civic records spell his name as Russel.
Russell Smith, Lance Corporal (14541156) 272 Field Company, Royal Engineers. Age 33.
Born 1911 in Penninghame. Son of Russel and Janet (McTier) Smith of Mid Lodge, Penninghame. Husband of Annie (Dewar) Smith of Newton Stewart who he married in 1937 in Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire.
Killed in action 16 October 1944 and buried in Assisi War Cemetery, Italy.

C.P.O. ALFRED STARKEY.
Alfred Starkey, Chief Petty Officer Telegraphist (D/J 39484) HMS Itchen, Royal Navy. Age 45.
Born 1898 in Penninghame. Son of Alfred and Jessie (McGibbon) Starkey of Newton Stewart. Husband of Maggie (Parker) Starkey of Newton Stewart who he married in 1928 in Penninghame. Alfred was a butcher's boy when he joined the navy in March 1915. On 2 September 1916 (his 18th birthday) signing on for 12 years. He served as a telegraphist throughout the remainder of the First World War.
Killed in action/Lost at sea 23 September 1943 and listed on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
The frigate "Itchen" was sunk by U-666 in the North Atlantic. She had on board 81 survivors from the Canadian destroyer HMCS St. Croix. Only three men from the combined crews survived.


CAPT. PATRICK K. M. STEWART.
Patrick Kenneth Montgomery Stewart, Captain (53716) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 27.
Born 1912 in Farnham, Surrey. Son of Colonel Patrick Alexander Vansittart Stewart C.B.E. D.S.O. and of Mildred Annie Ferres (Guy) Stewart of Little Corsbie, Newton Stewart.
Died of wounds sustained at Dunkirk on 6 June 1940 in hospital at Dartford, Kent and buried in Brompton Cemetery, London. (CWG)
1st KOSB, 3rd Infantry Division, BEF embarked for France in 1939. They crossed the Belgian frontier in May 1940 but were evacuated from the beaches at Dunkirk on 1st June.

A little more on David Nelson from an August 1916 edition of the Wigtownshire Free Press.

Official intimation has been received by his parents that Private David Nelson, KOSB, has died of wounds in action. Private Nelson is a son of Mr T Nelson, interim burgh superintendent, Newton Stewart. Before joining the local Territorials he was employed at the Post Office.
