PostPosted: Sun Mar 08, 2015 2:02 pm    Post subject: Stevenston Memorial - Allan Dunsmuir Reply with quote

There is no Allan "Dunsmuir" on the CWGC or SNWM records. Neither is there any record of a soldier named Allan Dunsmuir in the Ardrossan and Saltcoats (A & S) Herald but there are numerous entries for an Allan Dunsmore. The information given in the A&S Herald for the family of Allan Dunsmore ties up with the information given in the Register of soldiers effects for the family of soldier Allan Dunsmore service no 6500. I am therefore assuming there has been a spelling error on the memorial itself.

CWGC Information

Name: DUNSMORE
First name: Allan
Rank: Serjeant
Regiment: Dorsetshire Regiment
Unit: 2nd Bn
Age: 44
Date of Death: 19/12/1914
Service no: 6500
Additional information: Son of John and Elizabeth Dunsmore, of Saltcoats, S'clyde
Memorial reference: Face D
Memorial: KIRKEE 1914-1918 MEMORIAL

The record of soldiers died in the Great War shows Allan was born in Saltcoats, enlisted in London and lived in Bermondsey, Kent.

The A & S Herald intimations database shows Allan died at Station Hospital, Bombay and was the grandson of the late David McAllister, of Stevenston; brother of Mrs P Angus, 5 Victoria Road, Saltcoats; brother of David Dunsmore, Station Square, Stevenston; nephew of Agnes.

The register of soldiers effects shows his brother David and sister Mrs Angus and also a brother George
