Joseph's service record shows he was born on 18th December 1896 in Kilwining. He was "killed in action during operations off the Belgian Coast". There is also a note on his record "Participated in ballot for V.C. granted for operations against Zeebrugge & Ostend 22-23 April 1918 London Gazette 23.7.18"

John's service record shows he was 20 when he enlisted in April 1916 and was a ploughman at Bankhead Farm, Stevenston. His father was John of Ardoch Crescent, Stevenston and his siblings were James 18; Jessie 22; Bessie 19 and Ann 16. The 1901 census shows the family at Shore Road, Stevenston and his mother as Catherine. There was also a brother Thomas born 1888. This is the Thomas D Gray who is also on the memorial

Thomas birth record shows he was born on 16 December 1887 and his parents as John and Catherine. The 1901 census shows the family living at Shore Road and a brother John who is also on the memorial.

The record of soldiers died in the Great War shows John was living in Bayswater and enlilsted in London

David's service records show he enlisted on 12 June 1915 aged 21 years 2 months and was a Miner. His father James was living at 13 Townhead Street, Stevenston though the family later moved to 11 Ardgowan Place, Cowie, Bannockburn. His siblings are listed as
William Hamilton, aged 36, 110 New Logans, Motherwell
James Hamilton, aged 33, 133 New Logans, Motherwell
Susan Hamilton, or Mrs Hartley, aged 28, 11 Ardgowan Place
Janet Hamilton, or Mrs McCulloch, aged 40, 16 Limekiln Rd, Stevenston

The record of soldiers died in the Great War shows David was born and lived in Stevenston and enlisted in Kilmarnock

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats intimations database has two "in memorium" entries for William on 4 October 1919 confirming his rank and date of death. One "brother of Agnes and John Leitch, Canal Street, Saltcoats" the other "brother of Mrs Thomson, 31 Raise Street, Saltcoats"
