The University of St Andrews has two war memorials, in St Salvator's Chapel on North Street. UKNIWM Ref No. 44477 & UKNIWM Ref No. 44479

The First World War Memorial was designed by the architect Peter MacGregor Chalmers. Stone acades bear the names of the fallen: between them are mosaics of Biblical scenes by the artist Douglas Strachan. The memorial stands in the apse, behind the Communion table.

The Second World War Memorial takes the form of a stained glass window on the south wall, by William Wilson, unveiled by Queen Elizabeth (mother of Elizabeth II) in 1950. It symbolises triumph through sacrifice. The central figure is Christ as St Salvator, bearing the wounds of the Crucifixion and the banner of the Resurrection. Left is St Andrew and right, St Leonard with his broken chains. Above these figures are the badges of the Navy, Army and Air Force. Below the window, in a shrine designed by Hew Lorimer, is the University Book of Remembrance for those who died in the Second World War.

The names are on the side panels of the alter and I have requested a close up photo of these.

As someone who has been employed in the University for 29 years I was both moved and more than a little humbled to read Kevin Stokes's account. Being contained entirely within the altar area of the university chapel, this site is not well known, to the 8,000 students and staff. I walk past the chapel almost daily but only slip in to sit at the back when the organist is training. Thank you.

The University of St Andrews , Roll of Honour and Roll of Service 1914 -1919 for King and Country prinded by R & R Clark Ltd Edinburgh . 1920. can be purchased from a good book dealer for around £40 .

This publication has details of each from the Roll of Honour and Roll of Service and also records if each were members of the University OTC , a Member of the University "Battery" , a member of the University Staff or by profession a member of the Royal Navy or Army .

I think that many of the Named on the St Andrews Univesity War Memorial at this location will be listed on the St Andrews University Officer Training Corps War Memorial - with head and shoulder photographs in CITY ROAD , ST ANDREWS . The present day OTC is called The Tayforth Universities OTC

Just to say that the niwm 44479 WW2 memorial you refer to is not the window. Instead, it is a pair of bells that were restored and dedicated in 1940. We have just catalogued the window and its reference is niwm 58085

In the University book I noticed the following name in the 'Roll of Service'

I wonder if M'Cash is actually listed on the memorial within the University.

According to 'Airmen died in the Great War', McCash was serving with 3 Sqn and not 35 Sqn. He was Kia in Camel B2369 on the Western Front.

3 Sqn was equipped with Camels in 1917 whereas 35 Sqn was equipped with FK8s so my money is on 3 Sqn being correct.

There used (about 40 years ago) to be an open copy of the University Roll of Honour in a recess in the south wall just to the east of the pulpit in the chapel. One page was turned every Sunday morning. Does anyone know when this stopped happening?
