2/Lt. J.P. ANDERSON, SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS.
James Parker Anderson – age 34 – Second Lieutenant, Seaforth Highlanders.
James was educated in Langholm before he studied at Edinburgh University where he graduated M.A. in 1908. After attending the Edinburgh Provincial Teacher Training Centre at Moray House he became an assistant teacher at Moffat Academy in Dumfriesshire but by July 1913 he was a teacher at the Nicolson Institution in Stornoway, Lewis in the Western Isles and he and his wife Mary and family were living in Glen House in Stornoway when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Seaforth Highlanders from an Officer Cadet Unit on 18 December 1917. James was serving with the 4th (Reserve) Battalion at Glencorse Barracks in Edinburgh when he became ill in the late summer of 1918 and he died of lymphadenoma and heart failure in the Military Hospital in Edinburgh Castle.
Born 1884 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Mary (Parker) Anderson and of William Anderson, and step-son of Margaret (Silver) Anderson of Newcastleton, Roxburghshire.
In 1901 James was at school in Langholm and was living with his grandparents, James and Agnes Anderson at 39 Eskdaill Street, Langholm.
Husband of Mary Glen (Alexander) Anderson of Perth, of the Schoolhouse, Balquhidder, and of Queen Street, Perth who he married in 1913 in Perth.
Died on Service on 26 December 1918 and buried in Perth (Wellshill) Cemetery, Perthshire.
Also named on the Edinburgh University Roll of Service, the Edinburgh Provincial Training Centre memorial, the Moffat Academy memorial and on the Nicolson Institute memorial.


J. ARMSTRONG, SCOTTISH RIFLES.
James Armstrong – age 19 – Private (36829) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
James was a wood carter for the Duke of Buccleuch when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in September 1917.
Born 1898 in Wilton, Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of Thomas and Jane Helen (Johnstone) Armstrong of Skippers Cottage, Langholm.
Killed in Action on 22 November 1917 and buried in Potijze Chateau Grounds Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Chalmers Church memorial in Langholm.

T. ARMSTRONG, CANADIANS.
Thomas Armstrong – age 18 – Private (270639) 116th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Thomas was a spinner and was a member of the local militia, the 37th Haldiman Rifles, when he enlisted at Dunnville, Ontario in February 1917. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in April and joined his battalion in France in September 1917. He was killed a year later at Monchy.
Born 1899 in Carlisle, Cumberland. Son of Edward and Annie (Murray) Armstrong of Dunnville, Ontario. Edward had been a postman in Langholm but by 1911 the family had emigrated to Canada.
Killed in Action on 27 August 1918 and buried in Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery, Haucourt, France.


T. ARMSTRONG, BLACK WATCH.
Thomas Armstrong – age 19 – Private (S/8319) 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Thomas's parents were originally from Langholm but they and their family lived in Glasgow. However from an early age Thomas lived with his grandmother Margaret Armstrong and his aunts Sarah and Joan Armstrong in David Street in Langholm and he was an apprentice joiner in Langholm when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France in July 1915 and was wounded at the battle of Loos. The battalion moved to Mesopotamia, landing at Basra on 31 December 1915. Thomas was killed three weeks later.
Born 1896 in Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire as Thomas Beaty Armstrong. Son of George William Armstrong and of Jemima (Wright) Armstrong of Kelvin, Glasgow and of Montreal, Canada.
Missing in Action on 21 January 1916 and named on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
Also named on the Langholm Parish Church memorial.

W.J. ARMSTRONG, CANADIANS
.
William John Armstrong – age 18 – Private (842179) 13th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
William and his mother and most of his siblings left Glasgow for Quebec in August 1912 and he was a mail clerk when he enlisted in Montreal in May 1916. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in September 1916 and joined his battalion in France in May 1917. William was reported wounded and missing but his remains were found in the Provincial Cemetery in Loos and he was re-interred in November 1919.
Born 1899 in Kelvin, Glasgow. Son of George William Armstrong and of Jemima or Mina (Wright) Armstrong of Kelvin, Glasgow, and of Drolet Street and De la Roche Street, Montreal, Quebec.
Died of Wounds on 15 August 1917 and buried in Loos British Cemetery, France.

J. BALLANTYNE, KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
James William Ballantyne – age 29 – Private (31521) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a tram car conductor with Glasgow Corporation Tramways and was living at Dowanhill Street in Partick when he married in 1914. He enlisted in Glasgow.
Born 1889 in Langholm. Son of the late Mary (Muir) Ballantyne and of William Ballatyne of Langholm. Husband of Betsy Margaret (Strang) Ballantyne of 7 Rannoch Street, Cathcart who he married in 1914 in Hillhead, Glasgow.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Langholm Parish Church memorial and on the Glasgow Corporation Tramways Langside Depot memorial, now in the Parkhead Depot in Glasgow.

Walter Ballantyne – age 20 – Private (G/53138) 2nd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment.
Walter was a footman at 17 Sussex Square, Paddington, London when he enlisted in February 1917. He was posted to 2nd Middlesex in France on 1 March 1918 but was killed at the end of the month.
Born 1897 in Langholm as Walter Armstrong Ballantyne. Son of the late Mary (Muir) Ballantyne and of William Ballantyne of Mary Street and of 10 Eskdale Place, Langholm.
Missing in Action on 27 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the Langholm Parish Church memorial.


R. BARNFATHER, SCOTTISH RIFLES.
Robert Barnfather – age 20 – Private (203974) 5th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Robert was a goods clerk at Langholm Station when he enlisted. He was wounded on 28 May 1918 and died of his wounds in the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Esquelbecq.
Born 1898 in Langholm. Son of Robert and Isabella (Couthard) Barnfather of 46 Caroline Street, Langholm.
Died of Wounds on 3 June 1918 and buried in Esquelbecq Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the North British Railway Company memorial in Waverley Station, Edinburgh.

WALTER BEATTIE, ARGYLE & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS.

Walter Murray – age 24 – Private (S/11141) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Walter served his apprenticeship as a printer in Langholm and worked for a stationers in Edinburgh. He enlisted in the Scots Greys in Edinburgh in September 1914 but was posted to the Argylls and joined the 10th Battalion in France in October 1915.
Born 1893 in Hawick, Roxburghshire as Walter Murray.
Walter M. Beattie lived with his uncle and aunt, John and Thomasina (Little) Beattie, in Eskdaille Street, Langholm.
Son of John and Isabella (Little) Murray of 2 Dalkeith Place, Hawick, Roxburghshire who had married in Langholm in 1888.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Langholm Parish Church memorial.


Sgt. W.C. BEATTIE, KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
William Campbell Beattie – age 26 – Corporal (29354) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers
William, aged 17, was a stone cutter when he originally enlisted in the 3rd Volunteer Battalion of the KOSB in November 1907, but as Private (60) he transferred to the Territorial 5th KOSB on 1 April 1908 and served as a Corporal and Sergeant until he was discharged in April 1916 as time expired after over 8 years of service. He had landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and after serving there and in Egypt he returned home. He re-enlisted as Private (5402) in the 5th KOSB in July 1916 and was reinstated as a Corporal before he was posted to 1st KOSB in France in December 1916 and then transferred to the 6th KOSB on 14 April 1917. Three weeks later he was killed.
Born 1891 in Langholm. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Porter) Beattie of 46 Factory Entry, Langholm.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial.
Also named on the Langholm Parish Church memorial.


DAVID BELL, BLACK WATCH.
David Bell – age 39 – Private (3/3393) 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
David enlisted in September 1914 and joined his battalion in France in November 1914. He was wounded and evacuated home but returned to his unit.
Born 1874 in Langholm. In 1881, aged 6, he was living with his mother Mary and brother William at Parliament Square, Langholm. He named William, and a Miss Sara Helena Latimer (born1881) who lived in Langholm as his next of kin.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Langholm Parish Church memorial.

DICK BELL, KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
Dick Bell – age 22 – Private (23372) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Dick worked in his father's plastering business in Langholm.
Born 1896 in Langholm as Richard Bell. Son of James and Janet (Bell) Bell of Langholm.
Missing in Action on 25 April 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Langholm Parish Church memorial,


Cpl. R. H. McL. BELL, KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
Robert Henry McLaren Bell – age 22 – Corporal (834) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a plumber in Langholm when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but contracted enteric fever and died on the Hospital Ship “Dongola”. He was buried at sea.
Born 1893 at the Town Hall Buildings in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. Son of John Bell, former Sergeant Gordon Highlanders and caretaker at Langholm Academy, and of Isabella (Sanders) Bell of 13 Eskdaill Street, Langholm.
Died on Active Service on 23 August 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Langholm Parish Church memorial.


W. BELL, ROYAL SCOTS FUS.
William Bell – age 19 – Private (40794) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
William had enlisted as Private (1421) in the 5th King's Own Scottish Borderers in November 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914, placed in the Reserves in December and transferred to the 12th Provisional Battalion in May 1915. He was a blacksmith when he was called up for service as Private (3960) in the Royal Scots in May 1916. He went to France on 7 October 1916 and was posted to the 1st RSF on 21 October. William was wounded on 13 November and died in the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station at Puchevillers on the following day.
Born 1897 in Langholm. Son of the late William Bell and of Mary (Henderson) Bell of 25 Rosevale Street, Langholm.
Died of Wounds on 14 November 1916 and buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery, Somme, France.
