The Scottish Military Research Group - Commemorations Project

As I enjoy wandering around graveyards, I thought I'd make use of my meanderings and started to send photos to the old War Grave Project (fore-runner of the War Grave Photographic Project). A lot of internal bickering began between the people there and this eventually led to it's demise.

This was just before the Scottish War Memorials Project formed and I just slightly changed my wanderings to visiting local memorials, then when the War Grave Project started ..... well, back to graveyards (mostly!)

I started seeking out the memorials local to me - Denny, Dunipace, Bonnybridge etc., cross referencing the names to 'local' CWGC/Family graves and am still attempting to update the Denny & Dunipace Roll of Honour which I have been plodding through 'on and off' for years! The original Roll contains 902 names and was published (I think) during 1919 as many of the men were killed/died after mid 1919 and are not listed as such in the book.

My main area of interest is Glasgow and surrounding districts. I am at the moment trying to photograph and record all the war memorials in the Glasgow churches.
Working on the City of Glasgow Police WW1/WW2 memorial, almost finished.
Working on a project War Memorials in East Renfrewshire, again almost finished.
Same with the East Kilbride War Memorial, almost completed.
Along with my wife we have recently completed the transcription of the City of Glasgow WW2 Roll of Honour and The WW2 Civilian Roll of Honour, both awaiting publication.
Recently posted the New Kilpatrick Cemetery and New Kilpatrick Churchyard CWGC graves.
Working as a stakeholder with Historic Glasgow on their War Memorial Project.
Visited the Somme this year so I have a lot of photos still to upload.

I aim to record all of the war memorials in Dumfries and Galloway, seeking out those lost or just missing. I also work with the WMT and the local council's War Memorials Officer and am currently applying smartwater to all of the at-risk metal memorials.
The local RBL Scotland co-ordinator had to give it up so I have been persuaded to take it on and currently have a house full of poppies and tins.
I record war graves in D&G and memorials around Scotland on an opportunity basis.
Special interest in stained glass memorials.
Enjoy giving talks around the region on related subjects.

I'm was interested in war memorials as an extension of my interest in local history. You can see local names listed on these memorials which give links to past and future generations. I'm also generally interested in graves and the stories behind the people listed.

Moving on, my interest became more focussed in the mining communities. There is often an assumption that mining was a reserved occupation throughout both the first and second wars so miner= non-combatant. But many miners volunteered and lost their lives including my own family. I know from my own childhood that there were wildly varying opinions on those who fought, those who stayed, and those who were conscripted in.

At the moment my contributions are limited to newspaper articles but maybe one day I will contribute some real research into miners and war memorials Smile
